Saskatchewan Linebacker Jameer Thurman and defensive back Rolan Milligan are both making a compelling case for the CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player award.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are in first place, and their defense is a big reason why. At the midway point of the CFL season, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are a dominant force. With a 7–1 record, they sit atop the West Division. A big reason for their success? Two of the league's top defenders, Thurman and Milligan, are leading the way.
Reigning CFL MODP
In 2024, Rolan Milligan won the CFL’s most outstanding defensive player award. Becoming just the second defensive back in league history to win the award. On the season he made 111 defensive plays including 71 tackles and eight interceptions.
Milligan shines in 2025 with his smart play and strong skills. He is the heart of the Saskatchewan defense. Whether he is covering the opponents top slot receiver, blitzing or making a big hit, his impact is felt all over the field. At the halfway point, Milligan has 29 tackles, two interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.
Jameer Thurman | Linebacker

The 2024 All-Star brings energy on every snap. Thurman is one of the most versatile linebackers in the CFL. He combines speed, power, and awareness to make plays across the field. In addition week 8 player of the week Malik Carney and Milligan’s cornerback partner Marcus Sayles. Thurman and Milligan have helped Saskatchewan become one of the best defensive teams in the league. They've done it with consistency and leadership — two traits that often separate the good players from great ones, and playoff teams from championship contenders.
Roughriders MODP History
In addition to becoming the first defensive back to win the award, Milligan was also the third Roughrider player to ever win the award. Jerald Baylis won the award in 1993, and John Chick in 2009. As Saskatchewan looks to win their first Grey Cup in 12 years their defense is going to be key. Afterall, it is the Canadian Football League, and as the weather gets colder the defense needs to heat up. If Saskatchewan is going to hoist the Grey Cup, Thurman and Milligan will need to continue to shine. Furthermore, their leadership fuels the team's defensive strength.
Looking Forward
Finally, the award will be announced in November, during the annual CFL Awards ceremony. During the Grey Cup championship weekend.
