Players to watch: Edmonton Elks

DB – Tyrell Ford

There are only positives when describing Tyrell Ford. His football IQ is extraordinary. He’s the anchor behind the Edmonton secondary with 5 interceptions, 7 pass knockdowns, and 41 tackles.

WR – Austin Mack

His 59 receptions, 925 receiving yards, 8 touchdowns, and 15.7 yards after the catch this season have been a great feel-good story. Austin Mack can play a big role in clutch moments, using the game clock to Edmonton’s advantage.

RB – Justin Rankin

The 50-yard touchdown run in the Labour Day Classic is one of the best runs this season. He has been the well-oiled machine for the Edmonton offence. Expect Justin Rankin to play a big role in the running and passing game.

QB – Cody Fajardo

He started slow last week in the Labour Day Classic and turned it around. One of the most beautiful traits of Cody Fajardo is his cool, calm, and collected approach when facing a challenge. He plays well under pressure.

LB – Nick Anderson and LB – Joel Dublanko

Both Edmonton linebackers are a blueprint for building your franchise for long-term success. Expect both to have a high number of tackles in this game vs. Calgary.

DB – Chelan Garnes

He is a great player in the defensive backfield. Chelan Garnes has played a big role this season for the Elks with 39 defensive tackles, 4 pass knockdowns, and 1 interception.

Players to watch: Calgary Stampeders

QB – Vernon Adams Jr.

His completion rate is incredible. In his 10 seasons in the CFL, Vernon Adams Jr. has eclipsed a passing rating of 100 plus 5 times (including this season thus far). His 24 touchdown passes to only 2 interceptions speak for themselves. Vernon Adams Jr. can single-handedly carve up a defence.

RB – Dedrick Mills

He is everything you love in a running back. He is also one of the most difficult running backs in the league to contain. His 923 rushing yards with a 6.0 average yards per carry are evident.

DB – Ben Labrosse

Ben Labrosse has had an impeccable breakout season for the Stampeders. His 5 interceptions, 4 pass knockdowns, 19 tackles, and 1 forced fumble have been a success story.

DE – Clarence Hicks

The native of Pensacola, Florida, is one of the best defensive ends in the CFL. He is a hard body to move from the edge on a running scheme if you are an offensive tackle. What Clarence Hicks does well is close the running lane and pressure a quarterback.

DT – Jaylon Hutchings

He will be a problem for the Elks offensive line. He is a master of applying pressure in the backfield. He is also good at deflecting passes.

WR – Jaylen Philpot

Similar to his brother in Montreal, Jaylen’s style of play is a thorn in your defence. His route running is as good as it gets for a wide receiver. His 733 receiving yards, 6 touchdowns, and a 13.8 average yards after the catch are all the evidence you need.

Keys to an Edmonton victory:

Don’t start flat.

You can call last week's comeback win resilience. At one point, things did not look good. Resilience is a great attribute for a football team. On the flip side, you cannot afford to play behind in the hope of a victory.

Keep the pace.

Calgary is a lot better than the record shows. They will play with urgency tomorrow. They also have a potent offence. Edmonton must match the score.

Use the crown to your advantage.

Nobody saw this coming, with Edmonton sitting atop the West Division at 9-3. The Elks have been playing phenomenally this year. Score points, create turnovers, and get your home crowd roaring as an advantage.

Use the clock.

It’s up to the offence to chew up as much time on the clock, provided they are not playing behind in the 2nd half. Wear down the Stampeders defence as much as you can.

Prediction

On one side, you have an Edmonton team that would love to hit the 10-win mark sooner rather than later. Calgary needs a win to stay alive in a playoff hunt. The only guarantee is that someone will improve their record.

Final Score

Edmonton Elks: 29

Calgary Stampeders: 27

Expect a back-and-forth game with momentum flipping regularly. This will have all the signs of what the Battle of Alberta is all about.

Edmonton hangs on to a narrow victory over Calgary.
