Changes Coming To Bombers’ Staff

Whenever a team goes to the Grey Cup, they get a target on their backs for other teams to go after their players and coaches. So it should be no surprise that some Bomber’s staff are moving on. This year there will be a lot of movement around the league as many teams are looking to make changes, so much so that I simply cannot keep up with all of them.

As of Wednesday, December 3 here are the moves made around the league: Calgary fired their special teams coordinator, and lost their defensive coordinator to Toronto. Winnipeg lost their offensive coordinator to BC and their assistant general manager/director of player personal to Hamilton. BC fired their head coach. Hamilton’s general manager went to Edmonton; and Edmonton hired former Calgary special teams coordinator as their head coach. Did you catch all of that; clear as mud right?

For the Bombers, we know that Buck Pierce will be going to BC to become their head coach. Buck served as Winnipeg’s offensive coordinator for the past few years, and his moving on creates a hole that the Bombers must fill. However, him leaving the team is welcome news to some Bomber fans. With Winnipeg’s quarterback, Collaros, unable to produce in Grey Cups, and in particular the play calling in the 2024 Grey Cup, some fans welcome the move. In the biggest game of the year, to not use the MOP and MOC, especially after your starting quarterback was injured is simply mindboggling.

Maybe, just maybe, this is the needed change.

The question that remains is who will take Buck’s spot in Winnipeg? So far, it has been fairly quiet on that front.

As mentioned, the other move for the Bombers is that their assistant general manager and director of player personal went to Hamilton to be their general manager.

This one might sting a little more than Buck moving on. Winnipeg has been excellent for many years finding players. And while Winnipeg’s general manager is staying in place, only time will tell how much of a loss this is for the Bombers.

If there is some good news here, it is this. Winnipeg is not in a massive upheaval. They are not looking for a new head coach. The organization is still very much intact. And finally, these moves are occurring early enough for Winnipeg to have a robust selection process to fill in the gaps.

Certainly that is all great news for Bomber fans who hope to see their team once again in the Grey Cup in 2025 right in Winnipeg…and maybe this time coming away with the W.

Maybe you agree. Maybe you disagree.
