The Edmonton Elks fortified their secondary by confirming the signing of American defensive backs Jalen Green and Leon O’Neal Jr. The team shared the news on Wednesday, drawing attention to their bolstered defense ahead of the upcoming CFL season.
Leon O’Neal Jr.’s Return to the CFL
After his stint with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, which ended post-training camp in 2023, O’Neal Jr. makes his return to the CFL. He previously recorded four tackles and a rush contributing 11 yards in two preseason games. Post CFL, O’Neal Jr. showcased his skills in the IFL with the Massachusetts Pirates, making an impact with 20 tackles and three pass deflections over three games in 2023.
At Texas A&M University, O’Neal Jr. made his presence known across 48 games, accumulating 161 tackles, six interceptions, and a dozen pass deflections. His pivotal role at Texas A&M led to recognition at the Senior Bowl and receiving the Aggie Heart Award.
Jalen Green’s Collegiate and Professional Journey
Jalen Green’s entrance to the Elks comes after two productive seasons at Mississippi State University, where he participated in 25 games. With 91 tackles, four interceptions, and 15 pass deflections under his belt, Green’s addition promises potential for Edmonton’s defensive lineup.
Aside from his collegiate achievements, Green has pursued opportunities in professional football, although brief, with the Houston Gamblers of the USFL. Despite not engaging in game play, Green’s past experiences and participation in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl are anticipated to contribute to his performance with the Elks.
