On Tuesday, the Edmonton Elks added former CFL All-Star linebacker Derrick Moncrief to their already impressive defense.
After attending college at Oklahoma State, Moncrief spent 3 seasons with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders (2017-2019), where he’d appear in 35 games and racked up a total of 132 tackles, 4 sacks, 5 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble. He’d earn the titles of CFL All-Star and West Division All-Star in 2019.
Moncrief played the 2020 season in the NFL, where he’d spend time on the practice squads of the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Rams. He’d be elevated to the Rams active roster on October 31, 2020, for the team’s Week 8 matchup against the Miami Dolphins and was moved back to the practice squad after the game. The Rams waived Moncrief on August 17th, 2021.
The Elks defense has played very well this season, and a player like Derrick Moncrief can make a massive impact both on the field and in the locker room. Moncrief will not suit up for the Elks rematch against the Calgary Stampeders, as he is currently listed on the team’s suspended list while he begins a 7-day quarantine. Assuming all goes well while he’s in quarantine, Elks fans should expect to see Moncrief hit the field in week 7 versus the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
