Coming off their first win last week against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Edmonton Elks are looking for their first win on home turf as they host the B.C. Lions.

The offence clicked on all cylinders

Led by excellent performances from quarterback Tre Ford, running back Javon Leake, and wide receiver Tevin Jones, the Elks offence had their best showing to date.

In his first start of the 2024 season last week, Ford led the Elks to their first victory. Ford threw for 252 yards and a pair of touchdowns and gained another 46 yards on the ground with an average of 9.2 yards per carry.

Leake provided Edmonton’s running game with a breakout performance, scoring three touchdowns while rushing for 169 yards in 13 carries. Known for his top-notch speed, Leake ran the fastest speed of any player in the CFL this season, with a staggering 35.8 KM per hour, 22.5 miles per hour, on his second touchdown of the game last week.

Included in the 515 yards of offensive production, Jones led the Elks’ receiving core with a sensational game of his own. Jones was the long-ball receiving threat the team needed, as he caught three passes for 163 yards and scored two touchdowns.

For the Elks to win the game, they need to pounce on the Lions’ defence, which is in the middle of the pack on rush (4th—88.8 YPG). However, the Elks should be able to produce another quality performance on the Lions’ pass defence, as they are ranked near the bottom of the league (7th—278 YPG).

Defence looking promising

The Elks’ defence stood their ground and limited the Roughriders’ offence to 392 net offence yards, an interception and three sacks. CFL tackle leader Nyles Morgan led the Elks with eleven tackles in the win.

Going into the game, the Elks need to clamp down on the Lions’ offence, which is looking to respond with a big game of its own after being routed by the Blue Bombers last week. The Lions lost their starting quarterback, Vernon Adams Jr., to an injury, and the team suffered greatly as they generated only 103 total net yards in the blowout loss.
