While this time of year is usually an ample time for CFL teams to collect prospects to evaluate at rookie mini-camp, the Tiger-Cats’ most recent signing could potentially upgrade one of Hamilton’s biggest needs on the defensive side of the ball. According to the CFL Transactions list, the Tiger-Cats have signed American defensive tackle Branson Deen. While the Tiger-Cats’ defensive line was effective at rushing the passer during the 2025 season, the team struggled against the run, especially against the best teams in the CFL.
During the 2025 season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats ranked last in the defensive rankings while giving up 5.7 yards per carry against the running game. The reason for that is the Tiger-Cats’ intentions to improve their pass rush, which they have accomplished with talented pass rushers like Julian Howsare and a strong defensive secondary. Unfortunately, the CFL is becoming a league of balanced offenses, and when the Tiger-Cats cannot stop the run, they are at a distinct disadvantage. So, making a move like signing Brandon Deen shows they are trying to address the problem of stopping their opponent’s run game.
The 6’2″, 280-pound American defensive tackle Brandon Deen joins the Tiger-Cats after spending time with the Buffalo Bills during the 2024 NFL season. Deen played college football at Purdue University from 2018 to 2022, where he appeared in 39 games and recorded 49 solo tackles, 25 assists, and 8.0 quarterback sacks. He then transferred to the University of Miami for the 2023 season, playing 11 games and recording 6 solo tackles, 12 assists, and 2.5 quarterback sacks.
