CFL Power Rankings Week 4

Predictions: CFL News Hub Writers’ Week 5 Picks

Montreal Alouettes (3-0): The Montreal Alouettes are flying high on a 12-game win streak after defeating the Toronto Argonauts 30-20. Cody Fajardo has averaged 300 passing yards per game over the first 4 games of the season and currently has completed 75.4% of his passes for 1,200 yards and 8 touchdowns with 2 interceptions. It was another successful game defensively for Montreal as they held Toronto’s quarterback Cameron Dukes to 199 yards and no touchdowns with 1 interception although Bryan Scott did record 79 passing yards and a touchdown towards the end of the game. Over the last 7 games, Montreal has generated 12 interceptions while only allowing 3 passing touchdowns.

Calgary Stampeders (2-1): The Calgary Stampeders are coming off of a close victory against the Blue Bombers thanks to a 52-yard field goal from Rene Paredes in overtime. So far this season Jake Maier has completed 73.5% of his passes for 830 yards and 5 touchdowns with 2 interceptions over 3 games. Calgary’s defense is coming off a highly successful game of run defense after holding Winnipeg’s Brady Oliveira to just 26 yards on 10 carries last week.

Alouettes Keys to the Game

Get Pressure on Jake Maier

Last week Calgary had a strong game of pass protection, particularly in the first half in which he was kept clean on all but 2 of his dropbacks. Montreal will want to put some pressure on him to make things less comfortable than they were last week.

More Tight Pass Coverage

The Alouettes have allowed only 3 passing touchdowns while generating 12 interceptions over the last 7 games. They will remain contenders for as long as this high level of play continues.

A Healthy Dose of Screen Passes

In the Grey Cup, part of Montreal’s game plan was to throw in quite a few screen passes to help keep the defense on their toes and force Calgary to play wider. Calgary had a great game defending the run last week if Montreal is having their run support limited this week they can remain multi-dimensional by mixing in screen passes.

Don’t Abandon the Run

Last week Walter Fletcher rushed only 6 times for 11 yards. While these numbers discourage running the ball abandoning it would be a mistake. Montreal’s pass protection has had more success when run plays are being mixed in and one-dimensional teams are easier to defend against.

5 Alouettes to Watch

#17 WR Cole Spieker

Spieker led the team last week catching 8 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.

#84 WR Reggie White Jr.

White missed all of the 2023 season after suffering a knee injury in the 2022 season. He has played 2 games this season and has recorded 7 catches for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns.

#22 DB Dionte Ruffin

Last week Ruffin had 3 tackles, an interception, and a pass breakup.

#19 LB Geoffrey Cantin-Arku

Last week Cantin-Arku recorded 4 tackles, and 2 sacks, and defended a pass. He also had 2 total quarterback pressures and assisted with 3 stops.

#23 DE Avery Ellis

With Shawn Lemon now suspended, Avery Ellis will get the start at defensive end.

5 Stampeders to Watch

#80 WR Marken Michel

Last week Michel recorded 9 receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown.

#84 WR Reggie Begelton

Begelton had 7 receptions for 50 yards last week.

#20 RB Peyton Logan

With Mills out this week Logan will get the start.

#4 LB Cameron Judge

Last week Judge was tied for a team-leading 7 tackles and a sack.

#29 CB Ben Labrosse

Labrosse will be getting his first start in the CFL as cornerback Demerio Houston is out for this game. Labrosse was drafted by Calgary in the 2024 CFL Draft in the first round 4th overall.
