The long awaited anticipation is over, and the 2025 Bomber’s schedule is out…but did the schedule makers get it right?
I think there are some glaring mistakes with this schedule.
I will start with the obvious, the Bombers who were in the Grey Cup will start the season with a bye week. I get it, in a 9 team league someone has to start with the bye. But to have a team that was in the Grey Cup start with a bye is very anticlimactic!
Speaking about bye weeks, Winnipeg will have 2 of their 3 bye weeks before Week 7! Added to that fact is that the Bombers will have 2 back to back away games in their final 9 games. A total of 5 away games in 9 weeks. The Bombers will want to make good on home field advantage early in the season! If they do stumble out of the gate, at least the last 3 of 4 games are played at home.
Then we will look at how many times Winnipeg plays Saskatchewan. It is a total of 5 times! Granted, 2 of those are pre-season games, but why does Winnipeg only play Saskatchewan in the pre-season? Maybe it is because pre-season games are not generally well attended, so the league is trying to drive gate sales. Still ridiculous if you ask me.
Yet, the argument about driving gate attendance seems to fall short when we look at the rest of the schedule. In the last remaining 6 games, Winnipeg play 4 Eastern teams. The end of the season brings with it cold weather and it should bring with it games that have implications with the standings. Both things that someone forgot to tell the schedule makers.
I do not know who is posed to finish where in the West, but there is another major oversight. Winnipeg and BC were battling it out to be first in the West in 2024. Yet, after Week 3 they will not see each other again in the regular season.
Finally, I always think that there should be a Grey Cup rematch in Week 1! I get it, other team’s fans may not care. But I guarantee you, the fan bases of the 2 teams in last year’s Grey Cup do. If you want to really kick off the season and generate some excitement a Grey Cup rematch; not just in Week 1, but as the first game of the regular season makes a ton of sense to me. While I look forward to seeing Pierce come back to Winnipeg in Week 2, that is not worthy enough to trump a Grey Cup rematch as the first game.
All in all, I am not a fan of this 2025 Bomber’s schedule. What I like the most about it is that the Bombers have 3 of their final 4 games at home; which may help them in their playoff run. However, in terms of structure of the schedule there is more that I dislike than that which I like.
Maybe you agree. Maybe you disagree.
