The Hamburg Sea Devils hosted the Barcelona Dragons this Saturday, both teams with something to prove. The Dragons got their first win of the season last week, hoping to build on that momentum. The Sea Devils wanting to show how dominant they are, and keep their undefeated streak going.
The game started slowly, and wet. The rain definitely had a factor, slowing both of these offenses. The Sea Devils were without their starting RB Xavier Johnson, so power back Julian Ampaw was the workhorse.
The Sea Devils were the first to get within scoring range, but on a tipped ball, the Dragons defense came away with an INT. For the rest of the quarter the two traded punts.
It wasn’t until late in the 1st quarter where we saw scoring. Phillip Friis Anderson hit on a 46-yard fg. Dragons WR Jean Constant had a big-time punt return, putting Barcelona in scoring position. They ended up tying the game with a Giorgio Tavecchio field goal.
We didn’t see a lot of offensive action until Hamburg started a drive late in the 2nd, inside the red zone, QB Jadrian Clark threw his 2nd interception of the game. Looked like there was some miscommunication between the QB and his WR, as the Dragons CB Niko Lester took the INT all the way back for a TD. Dragons led 10-3.
But on the next drive, Hamburg was able to hit paydirt after 2 big plays by WR Lukas Rehder and Ampaw put them in position for Clark to hit Jean Claude Madin Cerezo for a 44 yard TD. Sea Devils tie it up 10-10.
The Dragons held their own on the next drive as QB Zach Edwards was able to get 2 big plays from his WRs Flores and Alarcon. Edwards ran it in for the score to give Barcelona the lead back, 17-10. It would be that way to the half.
Hamburg received the 2nd half kick, and attempted a drive to tie the game again, but, that wouldn’t be the case. The Sea Devils and the Dragons traded punts early in the 3rd quarter, but on the next drive by Hamburg, we saw another turnover.
Niko Lester grabbed his 2nd INT of the game, stopping the Hamburg progress in the red zone again. But on the very next play, the Dragons coughed it up, and the Sea Devils recovered the fumble.
The Dragons were held scoreless in the 2nd half, as the Sea Devils kicked 3 field goals to take the lead back with 4:53 left in the 4th quarter.
The front 7 for Hamburg kept the pressure on Barcelona’s QB Zach Edwards all game. Jadrian Clark had to deal with a lot of that from the Dragons defense too in this defensive battle.
The Dragons had the ball within the last 5:00, but once the 2:00 warning hit, tragedy struck as Edwards was sacked, and then a bad snap caused them to lose 19 yards.
Despite throwing 3 INTs, Clark was able to get the Sea Devils in scoring range to get 4 field goals from Anderson to take this one 22-17.
Hamburg remains undefeated (6-0) and takes on the tough Frankfurt Galaxy. Barcelona falls to 1-5, and play the Cologne Centurions.
