Argos Build Strong Line on Both Sides of the Ball

The Argonauts had two positions in mind in the 2024 CFL draft: defensive and offensive line. Among the 9 picks the Argonauts had, 6 of their picks were linemen.

With the fifth overall pick in the draft the Argonauts selected Kevin Mital, wide receiver from Laval. Mital was able to prove himself as an exceptional candidate at the combine in Winnipeg, impressing GM’s and increasing his draft value with his performance.

In 2023 playing for Laval Mital had 22 catches for 280 yards and 3 touchdowns. His best college  season was 2022 when he led the league with 58 receptions for 751 yard and 12 touchdowns in just 8 games.

The next three picks for Toronto were in round 3 selecting Waterloo defensive lineman Tyson Hergott at with the 24th overall pick. In three seasons Hergott stayed busy with 89 total tackles and 16 sacks in 23 games played. Last season, easily his best year, Hergott racked up 11 sacks and an interception as well as 3 pass deflections.

With the

27th pick they selected defensive back Tyshon Blackburn from the University of Alberta. In four years suiting up for the Golden Bears Blackburn had 100 total tackles with 4 interceptions. His best season statistically was 2021 during which he had 2 interceptions, 5 pass deflections and 32 total tackles.

The middle portion of the draft was spent brushing up the defence. In the fifth round the Argonauts selected defensive back Jerrell Cummings from the University of BC. In the same round Toronto took defensive lineman Ifenna Onyeka from Carleton with the 45th overall pick. With one year of college experience Onyeka managed 33.5 total tackles and 5 sacks with 11.5 tackles for loss.

In the sixth round they took defensive lineman Justin Sambu from Baylor University. In 2023 Sambu had just 2 total tackles.

ffensive Line Pickups

In the third round, with the 25th overall pick the Argos selected John Bosse from the University of Calgary. The Florida born lineman played four years for the Dinos and was a member of the team when they won the 2019 Vanier Cup. In the 6th round the team picked Anim Dankwah, who spent four years playing for Howard University. The last pick for Toronto was Daniel Shin from the University of Alberta.

24th overall pick: Tyson Hergott. DL – U of Waterloo

Round 3- 27th overall pick: Tyshon Blackburn. DB – U of Alberta

Round 5- 39th overall pick: Jerrell Cummings. DB – U of BC

Round 5-

45th overall pick: Ifenna Onyeka. DL – Carleton

Round 6- 54th overall pick: Justin Sambu. DL – Baylor

Round 3- 25th overall pick: John Bosse. OL – U of Calgary

Round 6-

48th overall pick: Anim Dankwah. OL – Howard

Round 8- 72nd overall pick: Daniel Shin. OL – U of Alberta
