Edmonton Elks Injury Report

Toronto Argonauts Injury Report

Players to watch:  Edmonton Elks

QB – Cody Fajardo

He made a statement in Montreal last week in his revenge game.  Cody Fajardo was cool, calm, and collected.  He will need to be the same way tonight when his next obstacle is in the form of the Double Blue.  Since taking over as QB 1 in week 8, he has been the boost Edmonton needed in being the architect of the Edmonton offence.  So far, he has completed 87 of 107 passes, with 999 yards, 6 touchdown passes, and only 1 interception.

RB – Justin Rankin

Justin Rankin will have to have a big day for Edmonton.  The bruising runner, and a punishing player for yards after the catch, is a luxury to have in Edmonton.  If he gets hot, it would be wise to mix him up in both the running game and passing game.  He is a player who thrives on teamwork and plays a big role in blocking schemes.

Players to watch:  Toronto Argonauts

WR – Damonte Coxie

With 43 receptions, 794 yards, 6 touchdowns, and an average of 18.5 yards per catch, he has been one of the league's best.  Many teams might have a good day in stalling his production on the field during a game.  As the game goes on into the 2nd half, you have to watch out for Damonte Coxie, as he is capable of carrying the team on his back.

LB – Wynton Mc Mannis

When you look for leadership on a roster, look no further than Wynton Mc Mannis.  He is the emotional leader, the team captain, and the coach on the field.  What is so unique about Wynton Mc Mannis is that not only does he lead by example, but he thrives on the emotion of other players when they make a play.  He will be a thorn in the Edmonton offence if they cannot contain him.

QB – Nick Arbuckle

Unfortunately, some quarterbacks in this league never get any respect.  Nick Arbuckle happens to be one of these categories.  Even with the multiple issues with Toronto this season, Nick Arbuckle is not to blame.  He has done enough to put Toronto in a winning position in at least 4 games this season.  With 2651 passing yards and 16 touchdowns, he will be a problem for the Edmonton secondary.

Keys to an Edmonton Victory:

Keep the confidence.

Edmonton has played well in its last three games.  It was a painful loss to Hamilton in week 9, along with the one in week 8 to Saskatchewan.  That win in Montreal was an emotional boost that the club was searching for.  This is a winnable game for the Elks.  Toronto has found too many ways to lose games at the wrong time.  Edmonton cannot let this opportunity slip away.

Dominate the special teams.

Toronto has struggled with its special team coverage this season.  If the Elks can get a few 30 – 40-yard returns to begin an offensive series, they will be in a great spot.  On that note, they have to go for the jugular in striking Toronto with a knockout punch to take one to the house.  When it comes to Edmonton’s special team coverage, they will have to be dialed in, as one of the best in the game, Janarion Grant, is always a threat to break a game open for Toronto.

Be smart defensively.

The Argos have some of the best receiving corps in the league.  The Elks' defence needs to be on the same page when it comes to man-to-man coverage or zone coverage.  The Argos have too many weapons in the aerial game.  If the Elks are not able to keep the pace, it will be a field day for the Argos.

Pound Toronto in the running game.

The Boatman has had a bad season, giving up a lot of yards per game.  They have had a tough time getting pressure in the backfield.  To counter that, Edmonton has the talent in the backfield to become a real threat to the Toronto defence.  Keep the running game going, and keep the Argos defence on the field for long drives.

Prediction

The obvious here is that both teams need this win.  Plain and simple.  With Edmonton being in a tougher division, the edge goes to Edmonton.  For the Argos, even with only 2 wins, and Ottawa and Montreal struggling, they're in the same boat as Edmonton.

Final Score:

Edmonton Elks:  33

Toronto Argonauts:  29

Expect a close game here.  With Toronto struggling to give up back–to–back 40-plus points per game in the last two weeks, along with their special team woes, it's hard to put this game in favor of Toronto obtaining the win here.
