Running back William Stanback announced his retirement on Instagram on Wednesday. He played last season for the Ottawa Redblacks in what will be his final season.
Stanback has played in 97 CFL regular-season games over 7 seasons. He joined the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes in 2018, where he played through the 2023 season, which saw him finish the year as a Grey Cup Champion. He played for the BC Lions in 2024 before joining Ottawa for the 2025 season.
He was a big part of Montreal’s Grey Cup run in 2023, rushing for 178 yards and a touchdown and adding 64 receiving yards.
Stanback has rushed 1,004 times for 5,591 yards (5.57 average) and 18 touchdowns over the regular season and caught 188 passes for 1,733 yards and 7 touchdowns. He has added 77 rushes over 7 playoff games for 384 yards (4.99 average) and 2 touchdowns with 17 catches for 159 yards over the postseason.
Stanback rushed for over 1,000 yards in 3 separate seasons and was named a CFL All-Star in 2019 and 2021.
Stanback played for UCF from 2013 to 2015, where he rushed 307 times for 1,152 yards and 16 touchdowns with 27 catches for 244 yards and 3 touchdowns. He finished his collegiate career with Virginia Union in 2016, where he rushed 207 times for 1,299 yards and 15 touchdowns, plus 12 catches for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns over 10 games.
