Linebacker Derrick Moncrief makes his return to the Green & Gold on Sunday after the team signed the veteran to a contract during the bye week. Moncrief played in nine games with the Elks in 2021 and tallied 21 tackles and four sacks. The 31-year-old reunites with Head Coach Chris Jones and Defensive Coordinator Jason Shivers who were with the Saskatchewan Roughriders staff during Moncrief’s first stint with the team. Moncrief is a former two-time Western Division All-Star (2019 & 2022) and CFL All-Star (2019).
"It's a match made in heaven for me to get back into this system with these guys."
Derrick Moncrief on rejoining the Elks under HC Chris Jones and DC Jason Shivers.
On July 7, the team signed defensive tackle Shawn Oakman. A CFL All-Star in 2021, Oakman previously played with the Toronto Argonauts for four seasons before released by the club last month.
The Elks are looking for their first win of the season but have shown they can hang with the top teams late in the games during the campaign’s first quarter. Including the season-opening loss to the Roughriders, Edmonton has lost all four games (Montreal, Toronto, and BC) by a combined total of 17 points.
