For the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-4) and the Toronto Argonauts (3-8), their annual Labour Day Classic clash goes beyond the records for each team. Although this season, those stakes are much higher for both teams compared to the last couple of seasons. For Toronto and Hamilton, this game will kick off their drive to the playoffs, or potentially send one of these into a spiral.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats come into this game holding onto the top spot in the East division after putting together a six-game winning streak. Lately, however, the Tiger-Cats have fallen on hard times, losing their last two games. Despite losing to the BC Lions and Saskatchewan Roughriders, Hamilton is still hanging on at the top due to the failures of the other teams in the East Division.

For Toronto, this game is a must-win, as it allows them to rally the troops in the second half of the season and secure a playoff position. Currently, the Argonauts would not qualify for the playoffs due to the BC Lions having a better record, which would allow them to be a crossover team for 2025. Last week, the Argonauts defeated the BC Lions behind an impressive offensive explosion resulting in a 52-point effort led by quarterback Nick Arbuckle.

Along with renewing the heated Battle for the QEW, this Labour Day classic also promises fireworks with Hamilton quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and Toronto quarterback Nick Arbuckle. This week, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats X account sent a reminder that this game is the biggest game of the year for Hamilton.

Coming into this Week 13 game, both Hamilton and Toronto are dealing with a variety of injury issues, according to this week’s CFL Injury Report. For the Argonauts, the majority of those injuries are on the offensive side of the ball, including wide receiver Davaris Daniels, a pair of offensive linemen, and running back Deonta McMahon. On the Hamilton side, most of the Tiger-Cats’ injuries are along the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, with three defensive linemen, and Nate Dumoulin-Duguay being out on Hamilton’s offensive. In addition, the Tiger-Cats will also be missing fullback Ante Milanovic-Litre and defensive backs Robert Panabaker and Lawrence Woods III.

Key to Victory #1: Tiger-Cats Must Explode Offensively

When the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are playing their best football, quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell is getting the ball to wide receivers Kenny Lawler, Kiondre Smith, and Tim White. On the downside, when teams are able to devise a way to neutralize those weapons, Hamilton’s running game is exposed for being average at best. This week, the answer is for Hamilton to find creative ways to get the ball to their offensive playmakers early and often. Up to this point in the season, the Argonauts have struggled on the defensive side of the ball; therefore, this should be a huge game for Mitchell and his fleet of elite wide receivers.

Key to Victory #2: Contain the Argonauts Passing Game

Since the start of the 2025 season, Nick Arbuckle has improved dramatically and has found ways to consistently get the ball to his offensive weapons. The Tiger-Cats’ defensive secondary is one of the most talented in the CFL, and with safety Stavros Katsantonis and cornerback Jamal Peters returning to the lineup, Hamilton will have a good chance to contain the Argos’ offensive playmakers. It is likely that Toronto will be successful on the offensive side of the ball early in this game, but in the second half, the Tiger-Cats will need to shut down the Argos’ biggest offensive threats.

Key to Victory #3: Pressure Toronto QB Nick Arbuckle

Another method the Tiger-Cats can use to disrupt Nick Arbuckle is to fire up their pass rush and force Arbuckle to perform under pressure. So far this season, the Argonauts’ offensive line has allowed 18 quarterback sacks. Unfortunately, the Tiger-Cats are ranked 6th in the CFL when it comes to sacking opposing quarterbacks, with the Argonauts slightly behind them at 8th. If Hamilton’s defensive front seven can find ways to keep Nick Arbuckle moving, then they will have a good opportunity to encourage Arbuckle to make some sloppy decisions.

Key to Victory #4: Force Turnovers

The biggest momentum builder, or destroyer, in the CFL is turnovers. If Hamilton can force the Argonauts to turn the ball over, then the Tiger-Cats will be able to set themselves up for success. Of course, that also means the Tiger-Cats need to protect the ball on the offensive side of the ball. Hamilton needs to come out ready to work as a unit to force the Argonauts’ ball carriers to fumble, and the Tiger-Cats’ defensive secondary needs to intercept passes when the ball is overthrown or gets tipped. In addition, a defensive touchdown would put Hamilton in an excellent position to secure another win against their rival on Labour Day.

Key to Victory #5: Win in the Run Game

Both the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Toronto Argonauts have struggled to establish their run game this season. On the other hand, when these teams win, they find a way to get their running game going early in the game. For Hamilton, having Greg Bell in their lineup at running back should give them a chance to establish their running game against a Toronto defensive front seven that has struggled to stop the run. Defensively, the Tiger-Cats need to be ready to shut down the Argonauts’ running game as well, and the addition of linebacker Braxton Hill should give them a good chance to accomplish that goal.

Game Prediction:

Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33, Toronto Argonauts 31
