Predictions: CFL News Hub Writers’ Week 18 Picks

Week 18 opens with two teams on win streaks as Winnipeg flies into Hamilton on a 7-game win streak to face the Tiger-Cats who have won their last 4. Friday’s doubleheader will feature the BC Lions hosting the Calgary Stampeders who desperately need to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. The week will wrap up with the Roughriders traveling to Edmonton to face the Elks.

All 3 games will be on TSN in Canada. The Friday game between Winnipeg and Hamilton will also air on RDS. Outside of Canada, all games are streamable on CFL Plus this weekend.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-6) @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-9)

Friday, October 4, 7:00 PM Eastern (8:00 PM CT), Hamilton, ON TSN, RDS (Canada), CFL+ (USA, Global)

Winnipeg is coming off an offensive explosion that saw them win 55-27 over Edmonton in which Zach Collaros has 6 touchdown passes. Brady Oliveira leads the league in rushing as he averages 5.8 yards per carry and has accumulated 1,107 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns. The Bombers have recently clinched a playoff spot and are currently first in the West.

Hamilton has climbed its way back into the playoff race after an 0-5 start and currently are just 1 game out of the playoffs. Last week saw Bo Levi Mitchell rack up 315 yards and 2 touchdowns with 1 interception in the 32-29 overtime win over BC. Tim White is 3rd in the league in receiving yards with 63 catches for 948 yards and 6 touchdowns. CFL rookie Shemar Bridges is 4th in receiving having caught 83 passes for 933 yards and 4 touchdowns.

The Bombers are on a 7-game win streak while the Tiger-Cats are on a 4-game win streak. These teams last met in week 12 which saw Winnipeg win at home 26-23.

Calgary Stampeders (4-9-1) @ BC Lions (7-8)

Friday, October 4, 10:00 PM Eastern (7:00 PM PT), Vancouver, BC, TSN (Canada), CFL+ (USA, Global)

Calgary will realistically need to win their remaining 4 games to have a shot at making the playoffs. The Stampeders are coming off the bye and look to get their first win in 6 games. Jake Maier has completed 72.7% of his passes this season for 3,354 yards and 18 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. Reggie Begelton is 5th in receiving in the league with 76 catches for 921 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The BC Lions last week fell victim to a Hamilton Tiger-Cat comeback victory as they lost 32-19 in overtime. Nathan Rourke completed 22 of his 36 passes for 264 yards in the loss. William Stanback has been a force in the run game and is currently 2nd in rushing after rushing 202 times for 1,062 yards, 5.3 yards per carry, and 3 touchdowns.

This will be the third and final meeting between these teams this season. BC won at home 26-17 in week 2 and Calgary won at home 25-24 in week 7.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-7-1) @ Edmonton Elks (5-10)

Saturday, October 5, 7:00 PM Eastern (5:00 PM MT), Regina, SK, CTV (Canada), CFL+ (USA, Global)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have won their last 2 games after going through a stretch of 7 games without a win. Last week saw the Riders win at home 29-16 over Ottawa. Trevor Harris has been highly efficient this season completing 70.8% for 2,635 yards and 16 touchdowns with 7 interceptions over 9 games.

The Edmonton Elks have lost their last 2 games which were both to Winnipeg after they had won 5 games in a 6-game span. Last week Edmonton lost 27-55 in Winnipeg. McLeod Bethel-Thompson is third in passing yards having completed 66.7% of his passes for 3,369 yards and 22 touchdowns with 9 interceptions. It is not yet certain who will start for Edmonton at quarterback this week if they will make another change and go back to Tre Ford who has 3 starts this season.

Saskatchewan defeated Edmonton on the road in week 1 29-21 and Edmonton won on the road in Saskatchewan 42-31 in week 9.
