Known for his unique stadium entrances, eating sour gummy worms on the sideline, his propeller hat, and his huge smile, fans will miss all of that as Lucky Whitehead calls it a career.
CFL fans may not know that Lucky got his start in the NFL. As a undrafted free agent Lucky joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2015 and played two season for them appearing in 30 games.
After his time with Dallas, Lucky joined the New York Jets, but did not play in a single regular season game. But that would not be the end of his career. Instead Lucky found a spot in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2019.
Being a part of the team that helped Winnipeg break its Grey Cup drought endeared him to Bomber fans. However, after a cancelled 2020 CFL season, Whitehead would join the BC Lions in 2021 and play 3 seasons there. With the Bombers looking for a bump in their receiving game, they added Whitehead to the practice roster on July 8th. On July 30, 2024 Lucky moved on to the Bombers active roster.
The Bombers were hoping for some magic that Lucky had shown previously.
However, what really plagued Lucky in the 2024 season were his fumbles. Both in the 2024 Western Final, and in the 2024 Grey Cup, securing that ball was a challenge for Whitehead. At the 2024 Grey Cup after his fumble, I turned to my son and said, “That’s the deal breaker; he won’t be back in Winnipeg next year.” Bomber’s Head Coach Mike O’Shea has shown threw the years that he has little patience for returners that do not secure the football.
The question that comes out of agreeing to terms with Gavin Cobb is what happens to Whitehead. I am a really big Lucky Whitehead fan. But he is not the same player he used to be. In fact, Whitehead fumbled a return both in the 2024 Western Final and the 2024 Grey Cup. I think those fumbles sealed his fate and he is going to find himself on the outside.
