The announcement follows news of Canadian receiver Richard Burton’s retirement.
Shropshire’s Career Highlights
Trea Shropshire entered the professional football scene after not being selected in the 2023 NFL Draft. His journey saw him attending rookie minicamp with the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings but not securing a contract with either. Before joining the Argonauts, Shropshire showed his capabilities as a member of the D.C. Defenders in the UFL. Standing at six-foot-three and weighing 195 pounds, Shropshire has a collegiate record of 78 receptions, 1,936 yards, and 15 touchdowns from 34 games at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, along with experience at Blinn College, Texas.
Tolson’s Professional Journey
Similarly, Khalan Tolson remained undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft before briefly joining the Carolina Panthers and later participating in the USFL with the Houston Gamblers. The 24-year-old linebacker boasts 128 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble from 28 games at the University of Illinois.
Impact of Burton’s Retirement
The Toronto Argonauts are also bidding farewell to Richard Burton, a significant loss for the team. The Canadian receiver, selected as a sixth-round pick in the 2023 CFL Draft, leaves behind a collegiate legacy with Queen’s University. Over his career, Burton amassed 131 receptions, 2,016 yards, and nine touchdowns.
More XFL and USFL players who are without teams in the US are heading to Canada for a shot a playing. It will be interesting to see how they adapt to the CFL game.
