After a long off-season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are starting their push for a Grey Cup this week as they play their first pre-season game of 2026 against the Toronto Argonauts. While there is never a game between the Tiger-Cats and Argonauts where animosity is put aside, this edition of the Battle of QEW is not a high-stakes game for Hamilton. However, this game is a high-stakes game for those Tiger-Cats players who are fighting for their spot on the Tiger-Cats 2026 roster, and those battles will be the intriguing part of this game.

During the 2025 CFL season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats had a breakthrough under Scott Milanovich, winning the East Division. That allowed Hamilton to host the East Division Finals, and while the Tiger-Cats had the potential to return to the Grey Cup championship game, they came up short against the Montreal Alouettes. Heading into 2026, the Tiger-Cats have their explosive playmakers returning on the offensive side of the ball, including quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and a fleet of outstanding wide receivers. Defensively, the Tiger-Cats have worked to improve their defensive line and fill the gap left by linebacker Devin Veresuk's pursuit of an NFL opportunity.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Backup Quarterback Battle

Bo Levi Mitchell is set as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats' starting quarterback. The more interesting battle is between Tre Ford and Jake Dolegala for the backup spot. Having a reliable backup quarterback is crucial in a long CFL season, as Mitchell's past injury history shows. If Mitchell goes down, the Tiger-Cats need a backup who can step in and consistently deliver the ball to receivers Kurleigh Gittens Jr. and Kenny Lawler.

Sorting Out an Intriguing Receiver Group

Similar to the quarterback position, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have an impressive lineup of explosive receivers, including Lawler, Gittens, Shemar Bridges, and Kiondre Smith. However, the Tiger-Cats identify the Canadian receivers with the most potential to step in and play a significant role in the offensive game plan. Long-time fixture at wide receiver Tyler Ternowski returns to the field once again for Hamilton, but depth is a critical factor for making a championship run, and depth among National wide receivers can be just as important as the readiness of the top receivers in the Tiger-Cats' wide receiver room.

Securing the Defensive Secondary

Similar to the offensive side of the ball, the Tiger-Cats have an impressive nucleus of defensive backs returning to their defensive secondary. However, some new faces are joining the foundation, including Jamal Peters Jr. and Stavros Katsantonis. The most intriguing battle in the secondary will be which of the new Tiger-Cats defenders is going to be able to step in and perform well at the Tiger-Cats Sam linebacker position. In addition to the Sam position, several young defenders are fighting for their opportunity to remain with the Tiger-Cats heading into the 2026 season, and all CFL contenders have outstanding depth at every key position group, including the defensive backfield.

Special Teams "Demon" Evaluation

An underrated aspect of the Tiger-Cats' structure for the 2026 season is how well players fit into the bigger picture in Hamilton, including identifying players who can be outstanding on special teams. Special teams are one of the most common sources for pivotal plays in a CFL game, and Hamilton needs several of their young prospects to step into important roles on the Tiger-Cats special teams units. For many rookies and bubble players, the ability to make plays on special teams provides them with a pathway to secure a spot on the Tiger-Cats active roster for the start of the 2026 CFL season.

The State of the Toronto Argonauts After a Tumultuous 2025 Season

Along with providing insight into the Hamilton Tiger-Cats' current state in 2026, this pre-season game gives Tiger-Cats fans a look at the Toronto Argonauts. The Tiger-Cats and Argonauts rivalry runs deep due to both teams being based in Ontario, just a short drive apart, and a complex history of player and personnel moves. These include the exchange of coaches, free agents, and business dealings between the franchises. Entering the season, Hamilton and Toronto have switched roles. The Tiger-Cats are striving to win a Grey Cup, while the Argonauts are facing a complete rebuild. This includes significant changes to their roster and front office, as well as a change at the head coach position.
