Calgary Stampeders Limp Into the Bye Week With a Big Question to Answer

The Calgary Stampeders' latest loss has fans scratching their heads. One week, the Stamps look like a serious threat to win it all. But the next week, they don't even look like a playoff team.

They currently sit in 2nd place in both the West Division and the CFL News Hub Power Rankings. But, for some reason, it doesn't feel like that.

Their inconsistencies leave many people wondering, Who are the Calgary Stampeders?

The West Division Standings showing the Calgary Stampeders in 2nd place.

Who are the Calgary Stampeders?

Conventional wisdom suggests that teams with losing records are easier to beat than those with winning records. Weirdly enough, that doesn't seem to apply to this year's Stampeders.

The Stamps are an impressive 6-0 this season against teams with a .500 or better record. That stat alone is enough for most people to consider them serious title contenders.

Unfortunately, that stat doesn't tell the whole story. They are an underwhelming 2-4 against teams with losing records.

The Stamps will enjoy a bye week this week. That should give them time to make improvements. But, they are running out of games if they hope to catch Saskatchewan atop the West.

Remaining Games

With six games left in the regular season, the Calgary Stampeders are only two games back in the West. They also hold the tiebreaker over Saskatchewan, courtesy of beating them twice.

Another bit of good news is that their rematch with Hamilton is the only game left on their schedule against a team with a winning record.

Unfortunately for Calgary, losing opponents have been their kryptonite so far.

Why, you might ask?

I, for one, think it's just one of those funky stats brought on by inconsistency. The Stamps offense is at its best when it makes big plays. But, it's also turnover and 2-and-out prone.

The whole team, especially the offense, will need to find more consistency if they hope to make a deep playoff run this year.

Thankfully, they have a bye week to hopefully figure it out.
