Calgary Stampeders Sign Veteran Defensive Back Shaquille Richardson, Releasing Maxime Latour

The Calgary Stampeders are strengthening their defensive unit by signing American defensive back Shaquille Richardson, who is set for a return to the Red and White. This reunification with the club promises to add valuable experience to the Stampeders’ secondary.

Shaquille Richardson’s Journey Back to Calgary

Shaquille Richardson, 31, hails from Compton, California and boasts an impressive professional football journey. He originally broke into the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2015 but was released to pursue an opportunity in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals. Subsequently, Richardson signed with Calgary in 2016, spending two seasons with the club before returning to the NFL.

His NFL resume includes stints with the Steelers, Cardinals, Chiefs, Titans, Panthers, Raiders, and a run with the Arizona Hotshots of the AAF in 2019. Though he has never dressed for a regular season NFL game, Richardson’s multiple stays in the league have added to his skill set and experience.

Calgary Stampeders’ Stint and Achievements

It was during his time with the Calgary Stampeders between 2016 and 2017 that Richardson played in 27 regular-season games. After leaving Calgary, he joined the Toronto Argonauts in 2019, where he won a Grey Cup in 2022 and earned an East Division all-star nod in 2021.

In his Canadian Football League career, Richardson has played in 56 regular-season games, recording 133 defensive tackles, six tackles for loss, 18 special-teams stops, one sack, five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 16 knockdowns, and 10 interceptions, including two pick-sixes. Additionally, he contributed seven tackles and one interception over four career post-season games.

Transaction Details and Future Prospects

The signing of Richardson marks a notable addition to the Stampeders’ roster, as his return brings not only defensive prowess but also a sense of familiarity with the organization’s playing style and strategies.

In a corresponding move, the Stampeders released Canadian long snapper Maxime Latour, who was active for the past two games as a replacement for the injured Aaron Crawford.

Richardson’s availability as a free agent since February and his decision to sign with the Stampeders signal a positive reinforcement for a team aiming to bolster its defense.

Shaquille Richardson’s return to the Calgary Stampeders is laden with expectations, as his prior stints in both the CFL and NFL have showcased his abilities. His signing with Calgary offers a glimpse of hope for a more solidified secondary, aiming to make an impact in the upcoming games.

The release of Maxime Latour, though necessary for the addition of Richardson, shows the dynamic nature of roster adjustments as the Stampeders continue to strategize for success. With Richardson’s signing, the fans and teammates of the Stampeders are undoubtedly eager to witness his contributions on the field once again.
