The Montreal Alouettes announce that they have extended kicker Jose Maltos Diaz through the 2027 season. He was previously going to enter free agency if a deal was not signed before CFL free agency opened.
Maltos Diaz played in every game for the Alouettes this season and the playoffs. He entered the history books as he set the record for most field goals in a CFL season at 58, previously held by David Duval in 2009 with 55. He also set a franchise record for the longest field goal in franchise history last July at 58 yards.
“Jose has become a good insurance policy for us,” stated Alouettes’ General Manager Danny Maciocia. “He has really improved over the last few years, working hard to reach the level he wanted to be at. He excels when the pressure is at its highest; he’s worthy of the great players.”
This past season, Maltos Diaz made 58 of his 65 field goals and 32 of his 33 extra points. Over the 3 playoff games, he made 7 of his 8 field goals, including a 45-yard walk-off game-winner in the East Division Final over Hamilton, and made all 8 of his extra points.
He played in 14 games for Montreal in 2024, making 33 of his 36 field goals with a longest of 53, and made 22 of his 24 extra points. In 2023, he played in 2 games, making 7 of his 9 field goals and 5 of his 6 extra points.
Maltos Diaz signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2013, where he spent time in training camp. He appeared with the BC Lions practice squad in 2018 and was on Ottawa’s 2019-2022. He represented the Mexican national team at the 2011 IFAF World Championship, where he kicked a 56-yard field goal that set a record for the longest field goal in World Championship history.
