Predictions: CFL News Hub Writers’ Week 17 Picks

The 2024 CFL season is shaping up to be an exciting finish as every team remains in the playoff hunt. Calgary is currently last in the league but is still 2 and a half games away from a playoff position although time is running out. Montreal is the only team to have secured a playoff spot thus far. Week 17 will open in Winnipeg as the Bombers host the Edmonton Elks in front of a sold-out crowd.

Saturday’s 3 PM game between Ottawa and Saskatchewan will air on CTV. All other games this weekend will be available on TSN. Montreal vs Toronto will air on RDS. In the US, Saturday’s game between Edmonton and Winnipeg will be on CBS Sports Network. All other games this weekend will be streamable on CFL+ in the US. Outside of Canada and the States, all games are streamable on CFL Plus.

Edmonton Elks (5-9) @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-6)

Friday, September 27, 8:00 PM Eastern (7:00 PM CT), Winnipeg, MB, TSN (Canada), CBSSN (USA), CFL+ (Global)

McLeod Bethel Thompson will start at quarterback this week for Edmonton as the Elks travel to Winnipeg to face the Bombers. MBT is third in the league in passing yards with 3,146 and second in touchdowns at 19 with 9 interceptions.

For Winnipeg, Zach Collaros is 4th in passing yards at 3,123 paired with 9 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Winnipeg defeated Edmonton last week 27-14 which saw Tre Ford start at QB for the Elks. Both teams had a strong run game last week as Justin Rankin rushed 14 times for 157 yards for Edmonton (11.2 average). Brady Oliviera rushed 18 times for 127 yards (7.1 average) and 2 touchdowns.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-9) @ BC Lions (7-7)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats head to Vancouver on a 3-game win streak to take on the BC Lions who were on a bye last week. Bo Levi Mitchell leads the league in passing yards with 4,044 and a league-leading 24 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.

Nathan Rourke has 5 starts since returning to the CFL and has 1,099 yards with 4 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. BC lost their last game in week 15 to Toronto 17-33 which saw both Rourke and Vernon Adams struggle to get the offense rolling.

The BC Lions won the last meeting against Hamilton on the road 44-28 in week 5.

Ottawa RedBlacks (8-5-1) @ Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-7-1)

The Ottawa RedBlacks have lost their last 2 games with the most recent being 12-24 at home against Montreal. Dru Brown was replaced by Jeremiah Masoli in each of the last 2 games. Brown is currently 5th in passing yards with 3,114 with 11 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

Saskatchewan snapped a 7-game winless streak last week with a 37-29 win over Calgary. Trevor Harris has the 2nd most yards per game at 290 but has missed time due to injury. Harris has completed 70.2% of his passes for 2,320 with 16 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

The last time these teams faced was in week 10 in Ottawa which saw the game end in a 22-22 tie after overtime.

Montreal Alouettes (11-2-1) @ Toronto Argonauts (7-7)

The Montreal Alouettes will face Toronto in a rematch of last year’s Eastern Final. Montreal defeated Ottawa last week 24-12. Cody Fajardo has a league-leading completion percentage of 73.5% paired with 2,615 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.

Toronto is coming off a 31-33 loss to Hamilton last week. Chad Kelly has the most passing yards per game since returning at 326. Kelly has 1,630 passing yards and 6 touchdowns with 7 interceptions over 5 games.

The last time these teams played was in week 6 when Toronto won on the road 37-18. Montreal defeated Toronto on the road in week 4 by a score of 30-20.
