Toronto Argonauts Extend Contract Of Star Defensive Coordinator Corey Mace

The Toronto Argonauts continue making moves to keep their championship core together for the future by extending the contract of star defensive coordinator Corey Mace. In recent times, the Argos have re-upped General Manager Micheal ‘Pinball’ Clemons, head coach Ryan Dinwiddie, and special teams coordinator Mickey Donovan.

The 13-2 defending Grey Cup champion Argos have also extended key players from their championship team such as superstar quarterback Chad Kelly, and star Canadian linemen Peter Nicastro.

The Argonauts defence has one of the league’s best young staffs that has a former player flavor to it led by Corey Mace, who despite his latest extension, figures to be a target at head coach by other CFL teams down the line. Much like he was last Fall after winning the Grey Cup. The 37-year old coordinator should have plenty of suitors.

“Corey Mace is a leader, first and foremost,” said Argonauts Head Coach Ryan Dinwiddie. “He preaches accountability and is able to get the best out of his guys each and every day. He’s a great coach, a better person, and we are thrilled to keep him in Toronto.”

Corey Mace, in his second season coordinating the Argonauts defence, has captained a unit that leads the CFL in sacks (54), interceptions (22), turnovers (42), opponent big plays (20, seven better than second place), opponent rush yards per game (79.6), is second in offensive points allowed (20.2) and opponents yards/play (5.98) while ranking third in offensive touchdowns allowed (31).

The British Columbia native, who joined the Boatmen at the start of 2022, saw three of his players become Division All-Stars, and was integral in helping the Argonauts capture their 18th Grey Cup championship last November.

The three-time Grey Cup champion joined Toronto from Calgary, where he coached the defensive line from 2016-2021, winning a championship in 2018. Before turning to coaching, Mace played defensive line for the Stampeders from 2010-2015, where he would win his first Grey Cup in 2014. The University of Wyoming product was originally drafted in the second round of the 2007 CFL Draft by Winnipeg before signing with the Buffalo Bills, where he played from 2007-2009.

The Toronto Argonauts named Corey Mace as the team’s defensive coordinator in January of 2022. He was signed to a two-year deal to run the Argos defence. Terms of Mace’s new deal with the Boatmen have not been disclosed as of press time.

Mace spent 2016-2021 in Calgary serving as the Stamps’ defensive line coach, and in those five seasons he helped Calgary lead the league in sacks three times from 2016-2018 and finish second in 2019, while also leading the league in opponent rush yards against (86.5) in 2018, holding opposing offences to a league low points (301) in 2017 and league low touchdowns allowed (11) and gain per rush (4.6) in 2016.

During his time with the Stampeders, The Vancouver native coached and help mold players like Charleston Hughes, Micah Johnson, Cordarro Law and Mike Rose into All-Stars and dominant defensive players. Mace also helped the Stamps hoist the Grey Cup in 2018, his first as a coach.

Before his coaching days Mace played 40 regular season games over six seasons (2010-2015) for the red and white Western Division team recording 44 tackles, four sacks and two touchdowns including a receiving touchdown.

The University of Wyoming product won a Grey Cup in 2014 and won the Presidents’ Ring award that same season for his contributions on and off the field in Calgary. Prior to his time in the CFL the defensive lineman played three seasons in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills (2008-2009), appearing in five games.
