Why the Calgary Stampeders' Win Over Winnipeg Was Bigger Than People Think

The Calgary Stampeders' early-season success has fans excited.

We are only 4 games into an 18-week season, so let's not get ahead of ourselves. Anything can still happen. But, after back-to-back disappointing seasons (5 and 6 wins), there have been good signs.

The Stampeders' recent win over Winnipeg was the biggest moment of the young season, which has seen good and bad moments.

Early Season Opponents

The Calgary Stampeders' first three games resulted in a solid 2-1 record. Unfortunately, it came against struggling opponents.

  • Hamilton: Started 0-2 (now 2-2)
  • Toronto: Started 0-3 (now 1-4)
  • Ottawa: Started 0-2 (now 1-4)

For the Stampeders to get back to the playoffs, they needed to prove they could beat teams with a winning record. Thankfully, they did just that.

The Winnipeg Game Was Different

Winnipeg isn't a struggling team. They started the season 3-0 and looked just as good as the team that made it to the Grey Cup last season.

Simply playing a competitive game against Winnipeg would have been a good sign for this Stampeders team. They took it a step further than that, cruising to a one-sided victory.

Although the Stampeders aren't perfect, they appear to be headed in the right direction.

The 2025 Calgary Stampeders Aren't Perfect

The early part of the 2025 season has included some struggles.

Scoring only 12 points in a loss to Ottawa was tough to watch. Also, their special teams play has been inconsistent at times.

However, the Calgary Stampeders' defense has been one of the best in the CFL. Against Winnipeg, Damon Webb nd Derrick Moncrief were responsible for the Stamps' 2nd and 3rd pick-sixes of the young season.

The Stampeders also boast enough offensive weapons to cause any defense headaches.

  • Vernon Adams Jr.: 66/103, 1,025 yards, 2 TD, 3 int
  • Dedrick Mills: 53 rushes, 311 yards, 5 TD
  • Jalen Philpot: 12 catches, 224 yards
  • Clark Barnes: 7 catches, 216 yards, 1 td
  • Dominique Rhymes: 9 catches, 184 yards
  • Quincy Vaughn: 8/8 converting short-yardage first downs.

Week 6

The Week 5 CFL standings showing the Calgary Stampeders in second place.

The Calgary Stampeders don't have any time to celebrate their biggest win of the season. Another tough test is coming their way this week.

The Stampeders will travel to Regina to take on the undefeated Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday. The game is a battle between the two top teams in the West Division standings.

It will be yet another chance for the Stamps to prove they belong among the CFL's elite.
