Steven Dunbar Jr.’s UFL Stint Comes to an End

Recently, the UFL’s Houston Roughnecks made the decision to waive Steven Dunbar Jr., a wide receiver with a prior CFL background. Dunbar, aged 28, had just begun his time with the Roughnecks, seeing action on the field this past Sunday after an initial period of inactivity. Despite being targeted three times, Dunbar concluded the game with a single catch that went for 19 yards, contributing in a game that ended in a 34-20 defeat at the hands of the Michigan Panthers.

Dunbar’s CFL Contributions

Before venturing into the UFL, Dunbar Jr. left a significant mark in the Canadian Football League (CFL). In the most recent season with the Edmonton Elks, he participated in 13 games, securing 39 receptions for 536 yards and adding five touchdowns to his credit. His performance made him one of the league’s top-paid receivers until his release, a move aimed at circumventing an offseason roster bonus of $65,000.

CFL Achievements and NFL Attempts

Dunbar’s CFL journey began with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2021. Over two seasons, he established himself as a key player, making 116 catches for 1,630 yards and scoring ten touchdowns. His exceptional performance earned him a spot as an East Division all-star in 2022.

Despite an undrafted start in the 2018 NFL Draft from the University of Houston, Dunbar sought professional opportunities, eventually joining and making his mark in the CFL. His football career also includes stints with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, and the XFL’s Dallas Renegades prior to his CFL achievements.
