Week 7 of the 2025 CFL schedule came to an end last Sunday and displayed a lot of drama. The Stampeders keep on rolling and are trotting their way with some convincing victories. Toronto was not able to close out the 4th quarter, and Montreal took full advantage in their comeback victory. Saskatchewan continued their winning ways over BC. It was close for the majority of the game between Hamilton and Ottawa, with Hamilton creating separation in the 4th quarter to seal a victory.
Here are your CFL News Hub Power Rankings after Week 7.
Previous ranking: 1
Record: 5-1
Calgary had been playing every week with a lot of confidence thus far. It seems that the locker room has confidence in taking down any opponent that crosses paths with the Stampeders. It was a night of the Cow Town defence halting Winnipeg at key moments of the game. A big shift occurred when DL Clarence Hicks laid out a big shot to QB Zach Collaros at the 06:30 mark of the 2nd quarter. Unfortunately for Zach Collaros, he slammed the back of his head on the field, resulting in an exit for a safety protocol. The Calgary defence was aggressive with 4 interceptions combined at the helm of both Zach Collaros and Chris Streveler, respectively.
Next game: Thursday, July 24th, 2025, vs. Montreal
Previous ranking: 2
Record: 5-1
Saskatchewan looked hungry on the road in BC Place Stadium. The defence was stellar in eliminating the BC running game and holding them to a total of 43 yards. On the offence, QB Trevor Harris was outstanding, going 23 for 30 in pass completions, 395 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, with a lone interception. It was a balanced offence with Saskatchewan totalling 111 on the ground, with a net offence of 504 yards. As we inch closer to Labour Day, Saskatchewan looks impressive, whether it is a home game or a road game.
Next game: Friday, July 25th, 2025 vs. Edmonton
Previous ranking: 4
Record: 4-2
The Tiger-Cats are playing a lot of complementary football within their current 3–game winning streak. It might not have looked good at times, as the Ottawa defence did a great job for a good part of the game, keeping the narrow margin within reach of an upset. Hamilton wore down Ottawa at the right time to put the game away from the halfway point in the 4th quarter to seal a 30-15 victory. It was a big day for the black and gold defence with 2 interceptions from DB Destin Talbert, along with 1 interception from DB Stavros Katsantonis. The defence was beyond textbook to say the least, as Ottawa was only able to muster 3 points in the second half. With Hamilton beginning to hit a stride, they will be making a lot of noise in the East Division.
Next game: Sunday, July 27th, 2025 at BC
Previous ranking: 5
Record: 4-2
It was impressive for Montreal when they hosted their eastern rivals, Toronto. You can call it being lucky. You can call it being resilient and staying in the moment. There were plenty of ways to describe the game between Toronto and Montreal. Montreal was down 25-7 when they struck with a late touchdown with seconds left in the 3rd quarter to keep the game within reach. With the score now 25-14, it was the Montreal defence that shut the door on Toronto. Toronto was unable to create any rhythm that was prevalent for the first three quarters of the game. They paid the ultimate price. Montreal woke up in the 4th quarter and maintained constant pressure on the Toronto offensive line that had no answer to engineer any offensive threat. Montreal would seal the comeback with a 26-25 victory over Toronto.
Next game: Thursday, July 24th, 2025, at Calgary
Previous ranking: 3
Record: 3-2
It’s unfortunate for Winnipeg at the moment. QB Zach Collaros took a heavy hit, resulting in departing the game. He would not return, and Chris Streveler would come into relief. Winnipeg were outmatched by the Calgary defence. It’s not like Winnipeg was not creating any offence. The issue for Winnipeg was that they were not able to cause any threat in the second half, with only 7 points on the board. The result would be a 41-20 victory for Calgary.
Next game: Saturday, July 26th, 2025, at Toronto
6 – BC Lions
Previous ranking: 6
Record: 3-4
BC had their hands full when they hosted Saskatchewan. Unfortunately for BC, being unable to establish the running game was a big problem when it came to time of possession. Not able to control the game with a balanced offence, resulting in BC with a total time of possession of only 24.14. Anytime you leave your defence on the field for 35.46 in a game, it is difficult for a defence to keep the game close. At 3-4, it’s not the worst case to be in at the moment. However, they need to find a way to keep consistent drives sooner rather than later.
Next game: Sunday, July 27th, 2025 vs. Hamilton
Previous ranking: 7
Record: 1-6
The injury bug is hitting the Nation's capital in a big way. QB Dru Brown has been taking a beating this season, and we are almost at the halfway point. On the defensive side of the ball, they have been in almost all the games they played. Ottawa needs to examine ways to close out a game. This season has not been kind to the Redblacks with injuries to key roster players. The Redblacks have a tendency not to be able to pull the trigger to take a lead, or hold onto one, for that matter. They will be in tough when they take on Calgary in week 9.
Next game: Ottawa will be on a bye for week 8. Their next game will be on Thursday, July 31st, 2025, vs. Calgary
8 – Toronto Argonauts
Previous ranking: 9
Record: 1-5
What looked like a promising game for the double blue on the road in Montreal came crashing down in the 4th quarter, which cost them a much-needed victory. For the first time in a while, the offence was moving the ball at a good pace. Let alone against a good team. Blowing a 19-point lead in the 2nd half was a result of poor execution on the offence, as the offensive line was unable to halt the pressure from the Montreal defence. It was a game that Toronto could have had, but they let it slip away.
Next game: Saturday, July 26th, 2025 vs. Winnipeg.
9 – Edmonton Elks
Previous ranking: 8
Record: 1-4
With the bottom three in the rankings all with only 1 win so far, the Elks fall to number 9, not because of default, but rather their poor offensive display. It is not set in stone at the moment. It appears that Tre Ford will be replaced by Cody Fajardo in week 8 when they go on the road to Saskatchewan.
Next game: Friday, July 25th, 2025, at Saskatchewan
