Ceresna a New Force on Argonauts Defensive Line

Jake Ceresna will be starting on the defensive line for the Toronto Argonauts after being acquired in an offseason trade with Edmonton.

A January trade between the Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Elks brought defensive lineman Jake Ceresna to the double blue. To the Elks went receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. and a 7th round pick in the 2024 draft.

In an interview with Argonauts.ca Ceresna described the news as a total surprise. Having been among the fan favourites in Edmonton, a trade was the last thing he saw coming.

“You’re a little nervous about something new and something unfamiliar. Once that shock wore off, I then felt the excitement, a new energy for this upcoming season. Overall, it’s going to be a great thing and I’m excited to play for Toronto,” Ceresna told Argonauts.ca.

The 29 year old linemen has made a name for himself in the CFL as a force to be reckoned with. In the last two seasons Ceresna has logged 22 sacks, 12 of which he got last season tying him for second most in the league. Ceresnna spent 4 seasons playing in Edmonton during which time he started 67 games after sitting out his first season. Jake has been quick to make up for that lost time, getting 157 tackles and 36 sacks three seasons.

Old Faces, New Contracts

Toronto has extended the contract of Folarian Orimolade through the 2025 season. Orimolade will be entering his second season with the double blue. He began his CFL career in Calgary where he played from 2018 to 2022. Through five seasons Orimolade has developed into an impact player, recording a career high 10 sacks last season along with 36 tackles.

Working in tandem with Ceresna the Argonauts defensive line is a true force to be reckoned with this season.

The Argos also brought back Benoit Marion for a fourth year with the team. Gaining minimal play-time in Toronto Marion has 7 career tackles and 1 recorded sack. Having won the Grey Cup with Toronto in 2022 Marion is a familiar face in the locker room.
