Saskatchewan Roughriders 2023 Coaching Staff Overview

Head Coach: Craig Dickenson

Craig Dickenson is a football coach who is currently the head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He was born on April 29, 1972, in Great Falls, Montana, and grew up in a family of football coaches. His brother, Dave Dickenson, is a former CFL player and is currently the head coach of the Calgary Stampeders.

Craig Dickenson started his coaching career in 1995 as an assistant coach at the University of Montana. After spending a few years at various colleges as an assistant coach, he joined the CFL in 2002 as a position coach for the Calgary Stampeders. He then had stints with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Montreal Alouettes, Edmonton Eskimos, Winnipeg Bluebombers and even the NFL’s Oakland Raiders. He has primarily been a special teams coordinator in the CFL.

In January 2019, Craig Dickenson was named the head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In his first season as head coach, Dickenson led the Roughriders to a 13-5 record and a berth in the Western Conference Final. The Riders finished last season 6-12 & missed the playoffs for the first time under Dickenson.

Offensive Coordinator & Quarterbacks Coach: Kelly Jeffrey

Kelly Jeffrey became a coach at a young age, working as an assistant at various levels before eventually becoming head coach at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. He later returned to the CFL as an assistant coach for the Argonauts, Montreal Alouettes, and Saskatchewan Roughriders. 

According to Riderville.com, “​​He is a three-time AUS Coach of the Year (2010, 2013, 2014) and was named the CIS (now U Sports) Coach of the Year in 2014, when the Mounties went undefeated. With Jeffrey at the helm the program won back-to-back AUS Championships (2013-14) and appeared in the championship final in 2015.”

Kelly Jeffrey became offensive coordinator for the Roughriders on December 12, 2022.

Defensive Coordinator: Jason Shivers

Jason Shivers is a former American football player who has made a name for himself in the Canadian Football League (CFL) as a coach. Shivers was a standout defensive back at Arizona State University before being drafted in the fifth round by the Chicago Bears in 2004 but never really caught on with the Bears. He played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats & Toronto Argonauts in the CFL.

Shivers got his start with professional coaching when he was a defensive assistant coach for the Toronto Argonauts during the 2013 season. He then coached the Edmonton Eskimos for 2 seasons before becoming the defensive coordinator with the Roughriders in 2015.

Special Teams: Kent Maugeri

Kent Maugeri has worked for the Roughriders for a few years now and became special teams coordinator under Craig Dickenson. According to Riderville.com, “In 2019, the Roughriders led the league in rushing yards and had the second-best rushing average per game.”

Defensive Position Coaches:

The other defensive coaches for the Roughriders are defensive line coach Del Cowsette, linebackers coach Deion Melvin, and defensive backs coach Marcus Klund.

Offensive Position Coaches:

The other offensive coaches for the Roughriders are receivers coach Drew Tate,  running backs coach Andre Bolduc, offensive line coach Anthony Vitale and finally offensive assistant coach Naaman Roosevelt.

Tate & Roosevelt are both former CFL players turned CFL coaches. Former CFL Quarterback Drew Tate played professionally in the NFL & CFL from 2007 until 2018. Wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt played professionally in the NFL & CFL from 2010 until 2021.
