Toronto Argonauts 2025 CFL Draft Recap

The Toronto Argonauts have concluded their 2025 CFL Draft process. The Argos added ten players, eight through the traditional CFL draft, with two additional selections in the global draft.

The reigning CFL champion Argos made news a day before the draft, announcing that Colorado quarterback and recent Cleveland Browns draftee, Shedeur Sanders, was added to the team’s negotiation list for future consideration. The theme of targeting 2025 NFL Draft hopefuls extended to Tuesday afternoon’s Global selections.

TORONTO ARGONAUTS 2025 CFL GLOBAL DRAFT CLASS

Round 1, Pick 9 – OL Valentin Senn – Connecticut – Austria

Round 2, Pick 18 – DL Soane Toia – San Jose St. – Tonga

Senn, 6’7″ and 305lbs, signed with the Arizona Cardinals following the NFL Draft last weekend. The Austria native played 41 games, starting 38-straight at left tackle, over four seasons at UCONN (2021-2024). Senn started his collegiate career at Colorado in 2020.

Toia, 6’0″ and 278lbs, played five seasons at San Jose State (2020-2024), seeing action in 57 games while tallying 153 tackles, 26.5 for loss, and 12 sacks. The Tonga native was the All-Mountain West First Team in 2024 and the Second Team in 2023.

If he ever makes his way up North, Senn is an intriguing left tackle prospect for Toronto. The Cardinals signed Senn to one of the largest undrafted free agent deals (signing bonus/guaranteed portion of salary). He received 274,000 in total from Arizona. Older than your typical collegiate draftee at 25 years of age, Senn has an impressive body of work on the blindside.

Perhaps an even more intriguing prospect than Senn is San Jose State defensive tackle Soane Toia. Many draft experts were surprised that he wasn’t drafted or signed after the NFL’s drafting process. That could change in the next few days, but for now, the versatile Tongan, who has shown flexibility to play on the offensive side of the ball at fullback, remains a free agent.

The Argonauts having a Global player on their roster, such as Toia, would be a luxury on gameday, with his ability to contribute on both sides of the ball.

Ojo, 6’2″ and 246lbs, was invited to New York Giants mini-camp following the NFL Draft last weekend. The University of Montreal product was a back-to-back All-Canadian (2023-2024) selection after totaling 14.5 sacks over 24 games for the Carabins. Led USPORTS in sacks in 2024 with 7.5. Ojo stood out at the CFL Combine this year, posting 25 reps of 225lb bench press while running a 4.59 40-yard dash.

Like last year’s first-round draft pick Kevin Mital, Ojo figures to be an immediate contributor for the Boatmen.

Shand, 6’4″ and 268lbs, signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent following the NFL Draft this past weekend. The Toronto native spent the last two years at LSU where he tallied 42 tackles, nine for loss, four sacks and three pass breakups in 26 games for the Tigers. Shand attended Arizona from 2020-2022, seeing action in 24 games and recording 41 tackles and five sacks for the Wildcats.

Unsurprisingly, former Argos assistant GM Vince Magri is part of a Bills front office that signed Shand. His versatility to play anywhere up front and elite physical skillset should make Shand a valuable asset if he takes the short trek from Buffalo to Toronto.

Coakes, 6’4″ and 315lbs, played four seasons at The University of British Columbia (2021-2024). The Winnipeg, Manitoba native was a member of the Thunderbirds team that went all the way to the Vanier Cup in 2023 before falling to the Montreal Carabins.

Coakes’s versatility on the interior is reminiscent of recent offensive linemen selections by Toronto.

Assibo-Dadzie, 6’0 and 190lbs, was named First-Team All-Conference in 2024 as a defensive back at Windsor. The Brampton native appeared in 22 games from 2021 to 2023 recording 67.5 tackles and three interceptions.

Rayam, 6’0 and 225lbs, played one game for The University of Texas-El Paso in 2024. The Alabama native started his collegiate career at Alabama-Birmingham from 2019 to 2021 where he would notch 15 tackles in 15 games before transferring to Middle Tennessee where he spent 2022 and 2023. Rayam would tally 38 tackles in 14 games while at UMT.

Zorn, 6’2″ and 205lbs, ran for 841 yards on 101 carries across nine games in 2024 for the Lancers. The Michigan native tallied 2,190 rushing yards and eight scores over 26 games at Windsor (2022-2024). Zorn was named Lancer Rookie of the Year and team MVP in 2022 after rushing for 856 yards and seven touchdowns.

Pyle, 6’2 and 285lbs, spent five years at the University of Guelph (2020-2024). The offensive lineman is from Milton, Ontario.

Masuka, 6’2″ and 200lbs, played four seasons at McMaster (2021-2024). The Hamilton native played in 18 games for the Marauders tallying 50 tackles, four interceptions and nine pass deflections.

Overall thoughts: The Argos didn’t take their typical yearly flyer on a premier NFL prospect, as they have in years past. A lottery pick at quarterback for someone like recent San Francisco 49er draft pick Kurtis Rourke, who Saskatchewan took, would’ve provided added intrigue. Nevertheless, Toronto addressed their defensive front immediately, with two highly talented players in Ojo and Shand.

In the CFL, it’s very commonplace for teams to start filling special teams roles from rounds three and beyond. That’s the overall outlook on the Argonauts’ draft class beyond Ojo and Shand. Because the roster is backloaded at several positions, cementing roles immediately will be challenging.

An unsung area of success for the Toronto Argonauts during their recent run of championship contention is what the club has done after the CFL’s Canadian player draft process. Several undrafted American players who are participating in NFL rookie camps will undoubtedly be on the Boatmen’s radar. Some of Toronto’s best signings the last few years have come from that crop.
