Most people are familiar with a “Game Ball.” It goes to a player who played exemplary football; someone who went above and beyond. Fewer, are familiar with the “Jock,” an award that goes to an idiotic play.
In a game that really came down to the wire, there could be a few candidates for each award.
Game Ball
You could give a game ball to Brady Oliveira for the run game. Ok, I know some people will just look at the stats and say, “What?!” So lets look at the stats.
“So you are thinking about giving Oliveira a Game Ball for 43 yards of rushing?” You bet I am! And here is why. Look at his “receiving yards.”
These are essentially run plays. When you have 6 catches for 60 yards with a YAC of 56, that means that Oliveira was catching many balls behind the line of scrimmage. More than an ‘extended run play,’ they really are run plays.
Willie Jefferson could also be an option as he blocked a punt early in the game helping to set the tone.
But I really have to give the Game Ball to Tyrell Ford with his 2 interceptions. He is now tied with Saskatchewan’s Rolan Milligan for 6 interceptions on the season. Something Bomber fans are ecstatic about as Ford still has many years to play. Tyrell Ford essentially ended the game with his second interception that game. All the Bombers had to do was take the snaps and take the knees…game over. For showing up big time, in a big game, making big plays, Ford you get my Game Ball.
Jock
Who wants me to give it to Brown? Ok, for now I will leave that one alone.
Right now it is a toss up between Saskatchewan’s defense and Trevor Harris. Why? In a game that Saskatchewan really needed to win, their defense was just “ok.” This is supposed to be a defensive juggernaut team that is awesome with takeaways. They had none. Sure Collaros only had 231 yards, but his efficiency rating was over 100. His completion percentage was 77% compared to Harris’ completion percentage of 63%. Yes, Harris had huge chunk plays, but without that, the Riders were in a ton of hurt.
Harris did throw 2 touchdowns…but he also threw 2 interceptions. Even with the chunk plays Harris averaged 8.7 yards per pass, while Collaros averaged 7.5 yards per pass…not a huge discrepancy.
In the end I am going to give the Jock to Harris. He is supposed to be Saskatchewan’s number one quarterback. He threw for 61% in the Labour Day Classic, and 62% the week before against Toronto with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. In the last 7 games Saskatchewan is 0-6-1. And that tie came with relief quarterback Shea Patterson at the helm; which begs the question, will Saskatchewan will stick with Harris moving forward.
No not all of the loss falls on Harris, but if you want to be the franchise quarterback you have to find a way for your team to win. For not finding a way to win, and for simply not being good enough when your team needed you, Harris you get the Jock.
