The proposed joint scrimmage between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders has been canceled according to Bonfire Sports’ Darrin Bauming.
The planned joint practice and controlled scrimmage is now a no-go for the #Bombers and #Riders, I am told. It is not part of the CFL’s health and safety plan for 2021 and the medical committee was not able to grant the go-ahead.
Jamie Nye of the Green Zone reported that the scrimmage was suppose to take place on July 24. Although the event might have been able to be approved by local health authorities, it certainly did not meet the approval from the CFL protocol.
Blue Bomber GM talked about the decision during a videoconference.
“When the schedule came out with no pre-season games, it was discussed, but ultimately it was not approved by the CFL and the medical teams,”
“Unfortunately, it just wasn’t able to come to fruition and we’ll just follow what the medical guys tell us to do.”
Although the scrimmage has been canceled, the rivalry is still very much alive between the two prairie teams.

The two teams will have to wait until the annual Labour Day Classic and Banjo Bowl to reunite on the field. The last time the teams face each other on November 17, 2019 during the Western Final’s in Mosaic Stadium in Regina.
