In this most interesting time of the year, teams are agreeing to terms without a contact actually being signed. Why? Because when a team agrees to terms with a player, none of these agreements are official as other teams have 2 hours before the deadline to counter offer.
So it is interesting when the Bombers post some of these on their social media, but leave others off of it, until they were officially signed. What should we read into that? I am not sure.
However in the last week the Bombers have agreed to term with defensive back Josh Hagerty from Edmonton; receiver Jerreth Sterns from Saskatchewan; receiver/returner Gavin Cobb from Edmonton; and most recently quarterback Shea Patterson from Saskatchewan.
Josh Hagerty
Jerreth Sterns
Gavin Cobb
Shea Patterson
There is one thing that jumps off the page with all these players; none of them have been in the league for a more than 2 – 3 seasons. This indicates that the Bombers are in a rebuild while still trying to keep continuity. For the past number of years the age of the Bombers has been criticized; and it looks like they are addressing that criticism.
The question that comes out of agreeing to terms with Gavin Cobb is what happens to Whitehead. I am a really big Lucky Whitehead fan. But he is not the same player he used to be. In fact, Whitehead fumbled a return both in the 2024 Western Final and the 2024 Grey Cup. I think those fumbles sealed his fate and he is going to find himself on the outside.
The Shea Patterson signing is also interesting for a couple of reasons. This signing seems to indicate that the Bombers do not think that Streveler is a bona fide number two. Also, fans may remember that Patterson was the player that Bighill hit last year. And while Rider fans were whining, Patterson simply said that he should have just taken a knee. That seems like the kind of guy that could fit into this Bombers organization. While Patterson is taking some hate on social media, if he does not fill in for Harris in 2024 the Riders likely do not make the playoffs.
So what do you think about these players that the Bombers have agreed to terms with?
