Bombers Sign Streveler – But Should They Have?

While many Bomber fans are ecstatic with this signing I am going to lay out some reasons why the Bombers should and should not have signed Streveler.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you will know that the Bombers signed Streveler to a 1 year deal.

Dru Brown was Winnipeg’s number 2 quarterback; but then he went to Ottawa to try and be their starter. So the Bombers needed to replace Dru. But it can be argued that Streveler is not a replacement for Dru. Dru was able to throw the ball down field successfully.

Streveler, on the other hand…not so much.

So if the Bombers were trying to replace Brown with a passer, they made the wrong choice. Remember, that right now the Bomber’s other quarterback – Dakota Purkop – is a pending free agent. The Bombers do not currently have another passer besides Zach Collaros.

However, if the Bombers think that they may not be able to re-sign their star running back – Brady Oliveira – then the signing of Streveler makes a lot of sense. In that case they will need another player that can run the ball…and that Streveler can do!

Fans will love this signing…but I do not think that the Bombers made this decision to appease any fans. It is not like the Bombers are having a hard time filling the stands. I can guarantee you that there is depth to this signing.

What is interesting about this signing is that it is a 1 year deal. And as I have mentioned in numerous articles, Winnipeg hosts the Grey Cup in 2025.

So the question that has to be asked is, ‘Why a 1 year deal’?

While I do not know for sure here is my speculation. It is possible that Streveler wants to have a great season and make another try for the NFL in 2025.

It is also possible that the Bombers initiated the 1 year deal. Streveler has not played a lot of snaps since 2019. And while that means that his body should be very healthy without having the ‘extra miles’ on it, it also makes Streveler a bit of an unknown. Sure we saw what he did in 2019 – and it was fabulous! But t is now 2024. And the question is, ‘Is this the same Streveler; a better version; or a worse version?’

As I mentioned in a previous article, Streveler is one of those players that does not fit into every organization. So if he decides he wants to return to the CFL, he needs to do so while teams that can benefit from his skill set are still looking to fill a quarterback spot. Winnipeg being one of those spots.

While only time will tell, what we do know if that the Bombers should be ordering in a ton of Streveler jerseys as they will be flying off the shelves!
