Bombers Sign Streveler But Will He Play

While the Bomber’s Facebook post says “17 IS BACK !!!!!!! We have re-signed Chris Streveler to a one-year contract,” that is not quite true.

The Bombers have actually “agreed to terms on a one-year contract with quarterback Chris Streveler.” Why is that an important distinction? Because when a team agrees to terms with a player, none of these agreements are official as other teams have 2 hours before the deadline to counter offer.

But let us say that they do finalize the deal; will Streveler play, how much, and in what capacity? In 2024 the Bombers completely misused Streveler. Some say that Streveler has developed a better arm after time in the NFL, I do not know. But I do not care either. Streveler has shown that he is best used when he runs like a dump truck all over everyone!

Yet, somehow there is this false idea that the Bombers need to be tricky. Critics will say, ‘When Streveler comes in it is obvious that the Bombers are going to run the ball with him.’ And I do not disagree; I just do not care!

When Oliveira lines up it is pretty obvious if he is going to block or run; yet he racks up the yards! When Tommy Stevens came in for Calgary on short yardage it was obvious what he was going to do. So who cares if everyone knows that Streveler is gong to run the ball? Apparently the only ones were the Bombers. They completely out coached themselves by not just letting Streveler do what he does best.

And the bigger kicker is that they did not use him in the playoffs and they did not use him in the Grey Cup. (The previous years when they did, it was limited). Maybe that is why the Bombers are not winning Grey Cups. They get to the big game and then outcoach themselves.

So while he is a fan favorite, and while I think they will actually sign him, my question is will they play him and use him the right way? Maybe the change in offensive coordinator (from Pierce to Jason Hogan) will see Streveler get to run the ball more. After all, Hogan had been the Bomber’s running backs coach for the last years; so you have to think he has a bias towards the run.

The fun part is that time will tell and we will get to find out together!

Maybe you agree. Maybe you disagree.
