The Bomber fans that were giddy and ecstatic after a win that saw the Lions only get 4 first downs and lose 25-0 without registering a single point – something rarely seen in the CFL – those fans have likely come back down to earth.
Why? Nathan Rourke. Rourke was cut, once again, from an NFL team and signed with BC.
While Vernon Adams was performing well for BC, after he got injured there was a huge drop of in quarterback play. Losing 33-16 the following week to Edmonton, it was clear that Dolegala was not going to be the answer for BC. Further to that point, after the Rourke signing, Dolegala was released.
Since the Adams injury looked like it would take time, and with BC hosting the Grey Cup, they made the move to go get Rourke.
But does that really matter? In 2022, the Bombers beat to the Lions in Week 5 and Rourke was the quarterback. They would meet again in Week 19, but by that time Rourke was injured – and Winnipeg won that contest as well. In Week 21 the Bombers would once again beat the Lions with both Rourke and Adams taking snaps. For all the hype around Rourke, up until now, he has not performed well enough to win against the Bombers.
Also, Bomber probably look as healthy as they have all season.
Of course this has meant some roster moves. Fans were wondering if Lucky Whitehead would stay on the roster when Lawler got back. And wile it seemed like a no-brainer, it was not a guarantee. Remember how long it took Whitehead to get onto the roster after being signed in Winnipeg.
However, as of right now, it looks like Whitehead will be returning kicks. That is good on a couple of fronts. First, Winnipeg needs to generate something off of their kick return game. Secondly, if a receiver does go down, Whitehead is already in the lineup to fill in that game.
The Pros Picks There is some discrepancy amongst the picks between CFL writers and CFL News Hub writers. Here is who picked who.
The Bombers need the win to stay in the hunt. They need to start closing the gap for the playoff hunt and that must start now!
With Calgary losing this week, Edmonton in a quarterback conundrum, and Saskatchewan losing, the Bombers need this win.
The Recipe For Success For the Bombers to win they do not need to do anything spectacular! BC is not a juggernaut team. Winnipeg needs to do the simple things consistently.
Hold on to the ball
Protect Zach
Catch catchable passes
Pressure Rourke
Do not take stupid penalties that kill/extend drives
That is it. It is a simple sauce for the Bombers to win. If they stick to the recipe they should come out with the win. However, if the Bombers get outside of those steps then the table is set for a recipe for disaster.
