Calgary Stampeders Cut Roster to 75 Players Ahead of 2023 CFL Season

As teams across the CFL undertake their annual process of trimming down their rosters throughout training camp, the Calgary Stampeders have announced their second round of cuts, reducing the roster to 75 players. The Stampeders had until 11:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday, May 16 to inform the league office of their roster changes, with official team announcements occurring throughout Tuesday and Wednesday.

Just days after training camps officially opened on Sunday, May 14, the Stampeders have made the difficult decision to release 11 players from their roster. This includes Global linebacker Ryan Gomes, who was a second-round pick in the 2022 Global Draft.

The full list of released players is as follows:

  2. LeVante Bellamy* (Running Back)
  3. Chris Brown* (Defensive Back)
  4. Joachim Christian (Defensive Back)
  5. Nik D’Avanzo* (Defensive Lineman)
  6. Ryan Gomes** (Linebacker)
  7. Michael Lawson* (Linebacker)
  8. Tyson Pauling* (Offensive Lineman)
  9. Jacob Pugh* (Defensive Lineman)
  10. Rahssan Thornton* (Defensive Lineman)
  11. Tim Wilson Jr.* (Wide Receiver)

These cuts are undoubtedly challenging for the team, the players, and the fans alike. However, these decisions are part of the annual cycle in professional football, where teams work to fine-tune their rosters for the upcoming season. Despite the roster changes, the Stampeders’ preparations for the new season continue undeterred.

Looking ahead, the preseason action begins on Monday, May 22, when the Edmonton Elks visit the Calgary Stampeders at 4 p.m. ET (2 p.m. MT).
