BC Lions

CFL Preview: Winnipeg at BC

After dropping their game 34-20 to the Bombers in Week 2, the Lions are looking to get back into the win column. However, there will be significant changes on both sides of the field.

The depth chart certainly looks different than the injury report. It does look like Clercius is going to play. But there are others that will not.

Of course the two spots that immediately jump off the page are the quarterback and running back spots. After serving his one game suspension, Collaros is back in. But he will not be handing the ball off to Oliveira. Instead, he will be giving the rock to either Peterson, who had a great game last game, or Cooley who looked good in the pre-season.

The Lions will be fielding a different look this week as well.

Again here, all eyes are drawn to the quarterback spot. With Rourke listed as a game time decision, I highly doubt he sees the field; I do not even think he will be in uniform. Why dress him if you will not even think about playing him. And why even think about playing him when BC does not need this win. BC needs a healthy starting quarterback.

That is not to say that Masoli cannot win. As we saw last week with the Bombers any team can win even if their starting quarterback is not in the game. It is just that much harder to do. But the Bombers better not make the mistake of thinking that since they have their starting quarterback in the game that they are destined to win. Every year in the CFL we see games go in ways unimaginable.

Keys To A Bomber Win
1) Head Games
No, I am not talking about getting in the the Lion’s heads, though I do love a good heckle. The greatest battle may be in their mind’s as they look across the field and do not see BC’s starting quarterback, and realize that they got Collaros back. Sports, even at a professional level is funny where teams can fall victim to playing down to their opponents.

2) Stop The Run
I have to believe that Butler will be a bigger part of the Lion’s offence this week; or at least that will be their plan. Stopping Butler will be instrumental in making life more difficult for Masoli. If the Bombers can convince BC to abandon the run game, Masoli will have a long night in the backfield.

3) Protect The Football
This one is so paramount to teams winning that it could be a key to success every week. However, I think the Lions struggle to put up points this week. If the Bombers do not protect the ball, and the Lions put up points off of turnovers, this could be a closer game than I expect.

Final Word
I fully expect BC to come out and try to win. Last time they met Winnipeg jumped out to a early lead and did not look back. In my mind, this game is going one of two ways. Either it will be a close game decided by 10 points or less, or the Bombers lay an absolute liking on BC beating them by more than 21 points.
