The Edmonton Elks are determined to keep their playoff hopes alive as they face the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Edmonton has been struggling after two straight lacklustre performances against Winnipeg.
There’s hope in Edmonton
Edmonton is in fourth place but is in a tight race for the final playoff spot in the Western division. They are four points behind BC and two points behind potential crossover team Hamilton, who are also fighting for their playoff spot.
The last time these two teams squared off was in week nine when interim head coach Jarious Jackson secured his first career win and the franchise’s first win of 2024.
Eugene Lewis has been an exceptionally reliable touchdown target for the Elks, scoring five times in five consecutive games leading up to this week.
Behind the Numbers
Two fundamental keys for the Elks to win are controlling the clock offensively and limiting the Riders’ offensive production while on defence. Coming into week 18, the Elks’ offence remains in the upper tier of the CFL in the major average categories. They are ranked second on points (28.4), touchdowns (43), net offence (376.4), and rushing yards (124.9) per game.
Saskatchewan’s defence is no laughing matter, though. They, too, are in the league’s upper tier in major defensive categories. On per-game average, the Riders are ranked third on points allowed and fewest touchdowns but sixth in pass and second rush defence, respectively.
Conversely, the Elks’ defence is in the basement in net offence allowed, giving up the third most points and passing offence.
The Roughriders’ offence is ranked in the middle in most categories, but their passing attack is the third-best in the league.
