Montell Cozart is on the move again. Two weeks after the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions signed former Ti-Cats QB Jalen Morton, another Quarterback movement of CFL pedigree was on the move. The Birmingham Stallions traded Montell Cozart to the Houston Gamblers for recent Gamblers signee Jesse Lemonier out of Liberty.
For Cozart, the trade to the Gamblers may be a bit more advantageous in extending his pro-football career. The former Stampeder is clearly the 2nd most experienced quarterback on the roster. Between his time in the CFL being a part of a Grey Cup Championship run, and his recent stint with the Stallions watching his USFL team win a championship, Cozart is in prime position to go into 2023 as the Gamblers QB2 starting camp and battle for the QB1 position.
The Gamblers now are set to break camp with Clayton Thorson, Kenji Bahar, Terry Wilson and Cozart. Cozart whose appeared in 21 CFL games per footballdb may have the inside track to leverage himself for extended playing time with the Gamblers. With Thorson coming off injury, former Argonaut Kenji Bahar’s, ineffectiveness, and true rookie Terry Wilson seemingly an afterthought, it’s no surprise Coach Kevin Sumlin is bringing someone into the quarterback room for 2023.
For Cozart it appears that the road to making this team goes from battling one former CFL QB to another. Regardless, of where Kenji Bahar or Clayton Thorson are on the depth chart today it appears that Cozart was brought in to shake things up. Despite his lack statistical success/experience in the CFL/USFL, Cozart’s been on two championship teams which may be what the 3-7 Houston Gamblers need going into 2023.
