The Edmonton Elks will wrap up their preseason schedule in Vancouver with the Friday night tilt against the BC Lions.

Starters resting as reserve competition intensifies

Most regulars Elks fans will see at next week’s season opener will be either on reserve or wearing street clothes for the preseason finale. This contest will be the last opportunity for players looking to earn a role on the main roster, as the cutdown day looms just days away from the regular season.

The third spot on the quarterback depth chart hangs in the balance as quarterback Jarret Doege gets the start behind centre, with fellow quarterback Malik Henry getting plenty of reps as the game progresses.

Like their offensive counterparts, the Elks’ defence and special teams will feature players who are vying for a spot on the 46-man roster. The entire Elks’ defence fared well last week against the Roughriders, limiting the opposition to 191 yards of total offence and allowing only one touchdown (20 of the Riders’ points were off Edmonton offensive turnovers). Furthermore, the defensive line core gave up 71 rushing yards.
