All signs point to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats using their resources during free agency to rebuild and upgrade their defensive front. One of those signs includes the multiple American defensive backs that the Tiger-Cats signed in January. Last week, the Tiger-Cats signed American DB Zamari Walton, and today, the CFL Transactions list shows that Hamilton has signed defensive back Darren Evans to their roster.
CFL teams are rarely in a position where they find themselves with too much talent in their defensive backfield. Generally, the defensive back position is hit hard during the long CFL season due to the tendency to use defensive backs regularly on special teams units. Evans is a good candidate for an athlete who should contribute to the defensive side of the ball and also be a contributor to special teams, especially the kickoff and punt coverage teams.
Darren Evans is a 6β3β³, 174-pound native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Most recently, Evans played in the UFL with the Arlington Renegades in the spring of 2024. During the UFL season, Evans played in eight games and recorded 16 solo tackles, three assisted tackles, and one intercepted pass.
Evans also played for the Arlington Renegades during the 2023 XFL season. During the 2023 spring season, Evans played nine games for the Renegades, recording four solo tackles, one assisted tackle, and one pass intercepted. Between Evansβs stints with the Renegades, Evans spent time on the New York Giants practice squads during the 2022 and 2023 NFL seasons.
Evans played college football for the LSU Tigers from 2020 until 2022. While at LSU, Evans played in 22 games, intercepted six interceptions, and registered 25 solo tackles and eight assisted tackles. Before playing for LSU, Evans played for the Nicholls State Colonels from 2016 until 2019. While at Nicholls State, Evans played in 38 games, intercepted four interceptions, and recorded 71 solo tackles and 29 assisted tackles.
