New Additions to the Tiger-Cats: DB Avery Young and RB Coach McCarty

According to the CFL Transactions list, the Tiger-Cats have signed American defensive back Avery Young. During the 2024 free agency period, the Tiger-Cats added youthful talent to their defence. Young is the newest addition to a defensive backfield unit that CFL All-Star Jamal Peters and National defensive back Stavros Katsantonis will lead.

Young is a 6’0″, 198-pound defensive back from Coatesville, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania native played college football at Rutgers University from 2018 until 2022. While playing for the Scarlet Knights, Young played in 57 games, recording 320 total tackles, 3.0 quarterback sacks, three interceptions, five forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. In 2023, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Young as an undrafted free agent.

Completing their Coaching Staff

Early in the Spring, prior to the start of the free agency period, the Tiger-Cats announced their 2024 coaching staff. A running backs coach was absent from the list of coaches added to the Hamilton staff. Today, former CFL fullback Calvin McCarty released a tweet on X introducing himself as the new running backs coach for the Tiger-Cats.

McCarty joins the Tiger-Cats coaching staff after a five-year playing career in the CFL as a fullback. As a fullback, McCarty played for Edmonton from 2016 until 2019, and in 2021, McCarty played for the Calgary Stampeders. This coaching opportunity in Hamilton will be McCarty’s first opportunity to prove himself as a position coach in the CFL.
