New Blood in Town: Tiger-Cats Sign DE Tramel Walthour

For another week this off-season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats continue to stockpile defensive linemen to help rebuild a defensive line that was one of the least effective in the CFL in 2024. Last week, the Tiger-Cats signed defensive lineman Maalik Hall after Hall had spent some time with the New York Jets in the NFL and the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL. This week, the CFL Transactions list shows that the Tiger-Cats have signed defensive end Tramel Walthour.

Recent roster moves by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats show that they are working to solve the problems that struck their defensive front seven last season. In the CFL, finding defensive and offensive linemen is always a struggle, and when a team finds players with potential upside, like Tramel Walthour, signing a player like Walthour is a win-win situation for both the player and the team.

If Walthour enters training camp and becomes a dominant player, the Tiger-Cats have found a diamond in the rough that could become a foundational player. Conversely, if Walthour does not provide what the Tiger-Cats are looking for along their defensive line, there is little to no loss for the team when they release the player. For CFL teams, the only way to make significant improvements to high-need positions like the defensive line is to take a shot with free agents like Walhour or get lucky with a draft pick in the CFL draft.

The 6’3″, 273-pound Walthour is a native of Hinesville, Georgia. He came to the CFL after spending time with the Baltimore Ravens during the 2024 NFL season. While Walthour lacks professional football experience, he does bring a wealth of experience from his college football career in the SEC.

Walthour played college football for the University of Georgia from 2019 until 2023. While playing for the Bulldogs, Walthour played in 51 games, recording 28 solo tackles, 21 assists, and two quarterback sacks. Before playing at Georgia, Walthour spent one season at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas during the 2018 season, and he played in 10 games, accumulating nine solo tackles, seven assists, and one quarterback sack.
