When the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as their new general manager, it was a sign that Hamilton understood it was time for significant organizational changes. Since coming to Hamilton, Goveia has made several front-office changes to improve the Tiger-Cats’ efforts to find and acquire new talent to rebuild their roster. The first significant wave of changes included Cyril Penn as the Director of Player Personnel, Alex Russell as the Director of Scouting, and Dave Vandernat as the Director of Pro Scouting.
With the CFL negotiation period opening on February 2nd and the 2024 free agency period opening on February 9th, the Tiger-Cats have made another change to their front office. The Tiger-Cats newest addition to their staff is U Sports veteran Tom Flaxman. Flaxman’s experience spans 20 years, starting with Flaxman playing running back for the Acadia Axmen from 2005 until 2008.
Flaxman started his coaching career with Acadia in 2008 and served as a coach for the Axmen until 2011. He then moved on to the University of Toronto from 2012 until 2013, Western University from 2014 until 2015, and McMaster from 2016 until 2018. In 2019, Flaxman started as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for Queen’s University until 2024.
In the summer of 2024, Flaxman returned to Acadia as the Axmen’s offensive and recruiting coordinator. Flaxman’s wealth of experience as a coach at the U Sports level should give Flaxman a significant advantage when it comes to assessing National talent. That knowledge could be a gamebreaker for the Tiger-Cats as they look for an edge when selecting new National talent during the CFL Draft.
