The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have invested their time during the 2025 CFL Negotiation Week, addressing the weakest personnel areas on both sides. In addition to reaching agreements with pending free agents, the Tiger-Cats have also been committed to re-signing key free agents. Many of the players that Hamilton has re-signed play along the defensive line and linebackers, like National linebacker Trevor Hoyte.
During the 2024 season, the Tiger-Cats generally struggled to play consistent football on the defensive side of the ball. One exception is the success that a young, rebuilt defensive secondary had in limiting opponents’ passing game in 2024. Due to the success of the Tiger-Cats’ secondary, it makes sense that they are making it a priority to keep the defensive backs who have built the foundation of their defensive backfield.
Early in the off-season, the Tiger-Cats re-committed to defensive backs Jamal Peters and Stavros Katsantonis while also re-working both player’s contracts so that Hamilton could bring in players to make life easier for their best players. Several recent agreements between Hamilton and pending free agents have included players to help Hamilton have one of the best defensive secondary units in the CFL in 2025. In addition to those players, the CFL Transactions list shows that the Tiger-Cats have also re-signed American defensive back Jonathan Moxey.
The Tiger-Cats signed Moxey to a one-year contract last off-season, and he played in 14 games for Hamilton. During the 2024 season, Moxey intercepted two passes and recorded 22 defensive tackles, one quarterback sack, and one special teams tackle. Hamilton’s decision to re-sign Moxey shows that his efforts in 2024 did not go unnoticed, and he will have another chance to make an impact for the Tiger-Cats in 2025.
Before signing with the Tiger-Cats, Moxey started his CFL career with the Calgary Stampeders from 2019 until 2023. Moxey played in 50 games for the Stampeders, recorded 71 tackles, three interceptions, and returned one interception for a touchdown. In 2022, Moxey was a CFL West All-Star. Before coming to the CFL, Moxey spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccanneers during the 2017 NFL season and the Arizona Cardinals during the 2018 NFL season.
Moxey played college football at Boise State University from 2013 until 2016. During that time, the 5’9″, 197-pound native of West Palm Beach, Florida, played in 52 games for the Broncos. While playing for Boise State, Moxey recorded 109 solo tackles, 23 assists, three interceptions, one quarterback sack, one forced fumble, and one recovery.
