After a relatively slow January, the Tiger-Cats ended the last week of January with a series of roster moves. Earlier this week, the Tiger-Cats added defensive lineman Mario Kendricks Jr. and linebacker Tyler Murray, but many times, when players are added to a position, someone must leave. One of those people is American defensive lineman Dewayne Hendrix. Hendrix was close to receiving a roster bonus, but after recording 17 tackles and one quarterback sack in 16 games, the Tiger-Cats chose to pass on giving Hendrix that bonus.
In addition to releasing Hendrix, the Tiger-Cats have chosen to add two Americans to their roster and re-sign National wide receiver Tyler Ternowski. The CFL Transactions list shows that the Tiger-Cats have extended Ternowski’s time on the roster and added American defensive back Tyler Boatwright and American quarterback Gavin Hardison.
Tyler Ternowski Extends His Time in Hamilton
Tyler Ternowski has spent his entire CFL career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats after he played U Sports football at nearby Waterloo. The 6’0″, 185-pound Ternowski has been on the Tiger-Cats roster for four seasons since being drafted by the Tiger-Cats in the 2021 CFL Draft. Ternowski has played in 47 games and has caught 28 passes for 346 yards and one touchdown pass. During the 2024 season, Ternowski played 16 games and caught six passes for 67 yards.
While Ternowski has not been an elite receiver for the Tiger-Cats, he is an outstanding role player. Ternowski’s value goes beyond giving the Tiger-Cats flexibility with the CFL Ratio rule due to his ability to make an impact on special teams. While his stats do not reflect his true value, his presence with the Tiger-Cats helps create a connection with the Hamilton community, and he finds success in any role that the Tiger-Cats need him to play.
Newest Additions to the Tiger-Cats Roster
The two newest additions to the Tiger-Cats roster, defensive back Tyler Boatwright and quarterback Gavin Hardison, have taken very different paths to the CFL. One thing that both players have in common is a need for the opportunity to prove that they have what it takes to succeed professionally. While both have failed to find a team to give them those opportunities, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are allowing both players to see if they can make the Tiger-Cats 2025 roster.
Boatwright is a 6’1″, 170-pound defensive back who spent his college football career at Central Connecticut State University from 2018 until 2024. While playing for the Blue Devils, Boatwright recorded 71 tackles, two tackles for loss, 22 pass deflections, two interceptions, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and two blocked kicks. In 2024, Boatwright participated in rookie mini-camps with the New York Jets and Giants but did not earn a contract offer. The San Antonio Brahmas of the UFL also signed Boatwright after their 2024 season, but the Brahmas released Boatwright earlier this week.
Gavin Hardison is a 6’2″, 206-pound quarterback who played college football at the University of Texas at El Paso from 2019 until 2023 after playing one season at New Mexico Military Institute in 2018. While at UTEP, Hardison played in 38 games and completed 570 passes with 1,063 attempts for 7.963 yards. Hardison also threw 40 touchdown passes for the Miners but 33 interceptions. In May of 2024, the Miami Dolphins signed Hardison as an undrafted free agent, but the Dolphins released him near the start of the NFL training camp.
