Tiger-Cats Rumored to be Negotiating with Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa

As the Tiger-Cats prepare to face the Toronto Argonauts in their final pre-season game of 2024, they are reportedly looking to add another quarterback to their roster. According to a report by the staff at SportsNet.ca and a tweet by Arash Madani, the Tiger-Cats are currently negotiating a deal to sign quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa.

American quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa is the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The younger Tagovialoa brother went undrafted during the 2024 NFL Draft and recently participated in rookie mini-camps with the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks in the NFL. Those mini-camp opportunities did not result in a contract for Tagovailoa, so he is looking north to the CFL to find a chance to prove himself as a quarterback at the professional level.

The 5’11”, 208-pound quarterback started his college football career at the University of Alabama in 2019, and he was the backup quarterback for his brother Tua Tagovailoa. In 2020, Taulia Tagovailoa transferred to the University of Maryland, where he played four seasons from 2020 until 2023. While at Maryland, Tagovailoa played in 41 games for the Terrapins, where he completed 955 out of 1,424 passes for 11,256 yards, resulting in 76 touchdowns and 37 interceptions.

During the 2023 season, Tagovailoa’s performance was nothing short of impressive. He led the Big 10 conference in several key categories, including completions (240), pass attempts (437), passing yards (3.377), and passing touchdowns (25). However, it’s worth noting that he also led the conference in interceptions with 11, a statistic that he will undoubtedly be looking to improve upon in the future.

It could reshape their quarterback room if the Tiger-Cats secure a deal with Tagovailoa. The team has a strong lineup with the likes of starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, backup quarterback Taylor Powell, and training camp hopefuls Kevin Thomson and Harrison Frost. However, with the possibility of signing Tagovailoa looming, the Tiger-Cats face a crucial personnel decision. The Tiger-Cats and the other CFL teams will announce their final round of roster cuts from the training camp roster after this weekend’s round of pre-season games.
