Tiger-Cats Make Flurry of Personnel Moves to Start Week 6, Add Punter Jon Ryan

The Tiger-Cats have concluded their Week 5 bye week by making a series of personnel moves heading into Week 6 of the CFL regular season. Commonly, bye weeks are an opportunity for the coaching staff to evaluate their roster and attempt to make adjustments to improve their overall roster quality. With that intent in mind, the Tiger-Cats have removed some players from their roster, and they have added a few names.

Hamilton has released American offensive lineman Aron Johnson, American punter Simon Laryea, and Canadian linebacker Jared Beeksma. The Tiger-Cats have also made some additions to their roster by adding veteran Canadian punter Jon Ryan and American kicker Seth Small. We will take a deeper look and see what these new additions potentially offer to the Tiger-Cats roster.

Canadian punter Jon Ryan is a 40-year-old veteran punter from Regina that has been successful both in the CFL and the NFL. Most recently Ryan played in 28 games for the Saskatchewan Roughriders during the 2019 and 2021 seasons. During his time as a Roughrider, Ryan had 169 punts for an average of 48.1 yards/punt. Before his time in Saskatchewan, Ryan played 12 seasons in the NFL.

During his NFL career, he played for the Seattle Seahawks from 2008-2017 and was a part of the 2014 Super Bowl champion team, and he also spent 2006-2007 with the Green Bay Packers. Ryan also had a stint in the CFL from 2004-2005 with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Jon Ryan was named a CFL All-Star in 2005, and a CFL West All-Star in 2005 and 2019.

American kicker Seth Small is a 22-year-old kicker from Katy, Texas that was previously on the 2022 Tiger-Cats roster in the pre-season, and he did appear in both pre-season games for Hamilton. In the pre-season, Small kicked and made 3 field goals, one of those attempts was a successful 51-yard field goal. Small also spent time in 2022 with the Indianapolis Colts at a mini-camp.

Before playing in the CFL Small played for Texas A&M from 2018-2021. During his career for the Aggies, he was 71 for 91 for field goal attempts and had a career long of 52 yards. Small holds records of the Aggies with 71 successful field goals, and 377 points scored.
