Top 5 Performances at the CFL Combine From Every Position Group

Looking at the top performers in different position groups from Thursday’s testing. Defensive back Benjamin Labrosse and runningback Michael Chris-Ike tied for the fasted 40-yard dash time at 4.51 seconds. Runningback Michael Herzogg finished the day with the highest vertical jump at 39 inches.

Defensive Backs

1. Benjamin Labrosse, McGill, 6′ 0″, 189 lbs

Labrosse had one of the best outings of anyone at the combine. He tied for the fastest 40-yard dash time among all participants. He also led his position group in the vertical and had the furthest broad jump among all combine participants. He also posted the fasted agility drill times in his position.

Bench: 12 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.51s, Vertical Jump: 38.5″, Broad Jump: 11′ 1 3/4″, 3-Cone: 6.76, Shuttle: 4.21

2. Cristophe Beaulieu, Laval, 6′ 1 7/8″, 198 lbs

Beulieeu’s 40-yard dash and agility drills are a good indicator of being capable of staying with receivers and changing direction swiftly. Additionally, he had the longest broad jump among defensive backs and posted a 35-inch vertical demonstrating good explosive power.

Bench: 12 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.66s, Vertical Jump: 35″, Broad Jump: 10′ 5 3/8″, 3-Cone: 6.84, Shuttle: 4.32

3. Jackson Sombach, Regina, 5′ 8 1/8″, 195 lbs

Sombach had another good combine outing after being among the top performers at the Invitational Combine which helped him get an invite to the CFL Combine. He showcased excellent speed and agility posting the 2nd fastest 40 time among his positional group. He also did well in the vertical jump and bench press.

Bench: 13 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.61s, Vertical Jump: 35.5″, Broad Jump: 10′ 2 1/8″, 3-Cone: 7.02, Shuttle: 4.28

4. Yani Gouadfel, Bishop’s, 6′ 2 1/4″, 201 lbs

Gouadfel showed good speed and agility. His broad jump demonstrates a good ability to explode off the line. 

Gouadfel impressed with his speed and agility, posting a competitive 40-yard dash time and solid results in the 3-cone and shuttle drills. His broad jump result further indicates his lower body strength and ability to explode off the line, essential traits for breaking quickly on the ball. His overall performance portrays a DB with good potential for physical play and quickness on the field.

Bench: 13 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.64s, Vertical Jump: 32″, Broad Jump: 10′ 0″, 3-Cone: 7.14, Shuttle: 4.25

5. Jerrell Cummings, UBC, 5′ 9 1/4″, 188 lbs

While he did not participate in the shuttle he did well in both the vertical and broad jump. He also had the best performance in his position in the bench press.

Bench: 17 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.74s, Vertical Jump: 36.5″, Broad Jump: 10′ 3 5/8″, 3-Cone: 7.39, Shuttle: DNP

Linebackers

1. Joel Dublanko, Cincinnati, 6′ 1 3/4″, 231 lbs

Dublanko showed a great mix of speed, strength, and agility. He posted the best speeds in the 40-yard dash and agility drills in his position and did well in the bench press as well. Among his position group, he was the fastest despite being the heaviest.

Bench: 16 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.59s, Vertical Jump: 35″, Broad Jump: 9′ 5 1/8″, 3-Cone: 6.84, Shuttle: 4.27

2. DK Bonhomme, South Alabama, 6′ 0 1/2″, 225 lbs

Bonhomme had the best vertical among his position group and also did well in the broad jump showcasing good explosive power. He had the 2nd fastest 40-time in his group and did well in the bench press.

Bench: 16 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.79s, Vertical Jump: 37″, Broad Jump: 9′ 11″, 3-Cone: 7.25, Shuttle: 4.44

3. Olivier Muembi, Queen’s, 6′ 0 3/8″, 226 lbs

Muembi had the furthest broad jump by a lot in his position and was a close second in the vertical for his position. He also demonstrated great strength as he had the most reps on the bench press for his group. Additionally, his speed and agility times were competitive.

Bench: 18 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.84s, Vertical Jump: 36″, Broad Jump: 10′ 5 1/8″, 3-Cone: 7.07, Shuttle: 4.44

4. Bowers-Kane, Lourenz, Western University, 5′ 10″, 200 lbs

Bowers-Kane demonstrated good explosiveness with his vertical and broad jump. His 40-time was competitive and he had the 2nd most reps on the bench for his positional group.

Bench: 17 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.81s, Vertical Jump: 35.5″, Broad Jump: 9′ 5 5/8″, 3-Cone: 7.27, Shuttle: 4.46

5. Zachary Philion, Concordia, 6′ 1 1/8″, 221 lbs

Philion showcased well at the combine. His combined agility times were third in his group. He also posted good numbers in the bench press demonstrating solid upper-body strength.

Bench: 16 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.8s, Vertical Jump: 31″, Broad Jump: 9′ 3 3/8″, 3-Cone: 7.03, Shuttle: 4.39

Defensive Lineman

1. Brandon Omonuwa, Wilfrid Laurier, 6′ 1 3/8″, 275 lbs

Omonuwa was impressive at the bench press at 25 doing 5 more reps than the 2nd closest in his positional group. He also demonstrated good speed for his size. His testing indicates a possible future threat of breaking through offensive lines.

Bench: 25 reps, 40-yard Dash: 5.08s, Vertical Jump: 30″, Broad Jump: 8′ 9 1/2″, 3-Cone: 7.46, Shuttle: 4.97

2. Tyson Hergott, Waterloo, 6′ 2 3/8″, 246 lbs

Hergott was a good balance of size and strength. He had the third fastest combined agility testing speeds and the fourth most bench press reps in his position. He also showcased good lower body strength in his vertical and broad jump.

Bench: 19 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.85s, Vertical Jump: 34″, Broad Jump: 8′ 11″, 3-Cone: 7.33, Shuttle: 4.63

3. Luke Brubacher, Wilfrid Laurier, 6′ 5 1/4″, 246 lbs

While Brubacher did not participate in the bench press he did exceptionally well in showcasing his mobility. He by far had the best times in the agility drills and the 40-yard dash in this group. His 38-inch vertical and broad jump was very impressive.

Bench: DNP, 40-yard Dash: 4.69s, Vertical Jump: 38″, Broad Jump: 10′ 6″, 3-Cone: 7.06, Shuttle: 4.34

4. Daniel Okpoko, San Diego State, 6′ 4 1/4″, 274 lbs

Okpoko’s 40-time was impressive for his size as well as his vertical jump. While his bench press numbers were not eye-popping he presents a player with a good combination of size and speed.

Bench: 11 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.96s, Vertical Jump: 34.5″, Broad Jump: 8′ 8 5/8″, 3-Cone: 7.39, Shuttle: 4.81

5. Jason Janvier-Messier, York, 6′ 2 3/8″, 232 lbs

Janvier-Messier showcased himself to be a well-rounded athlete putting up good numbers in every drill.

Bench: 17 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.88s, Vertical Jump: 34″, Broad Jump: 9′ 7 3/4″, 3-Cone: 7.34, Shuttle: 4.59

Quarterback

Casey Bauman, Augustana University, 6’6 3/8″, 229 lbs

Bauman really elevated his stock at the combine posting a good 40-time and doing well in the agility drills. His metrics were comparable to the runningbacks as his combined agility times would have been good enough for 4th among runningbacks and his broad jump and vertical would have been 3rd among runningbacks.

Running Backs

1. Michael Chris-Ike, Delaware State, 6′ 1″, 225 lbs

Chris-Ike demonstrated a highly impressive blend of speed and strength. He did the best at every drill in his position group except the vertical jump which he was second in. His 40-yard dash time was exceptional as he tied for first in that category among all combine participants.

Bench: 16 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.51s, Vertical Jump: 35.5″, Broad Jump: 10′ 2 1/4″, 3-Cone: 6.71, Shuttle: 4.19

2. Michael Herzog, Hillsdale College, 5′ 8 3/8″, 201 lbs

Herzog’s 40-time was exceptional and he was the 4th fastest among all combine participants. His 39-inch vertical was the best in that metric at the combine. He also did very well in the agility drills.

Bench: DNP, 40-yard Dash: 4.55s, Vertical Jump: 39″, Broad Jump: 9′ 11 7/8″, 3-Cone: 6.94, Shuttle: 4.2

3. Jared Chisari, Queen’s, 5′ 10 1/8″, 208 lbs

Chisari showed good speed and agility at the combine. His broad jump and vertical are good indicators of his explosiveness. While he did not participate in the bench press he showcased a competitive agility time that bodes well for his ability to make sharp cuts and accelerate.

Bench: DNP, 40-yard Dash: 4.71s, Vertical Jump: 31.5″, Broad Jump: 9′ 8 1/4″, 3-Cone: 7.07, Shuttle: 4.41

4. Matthew Peterson, Alberta, 5′ 9″, 203 lbs

Peterson showed good speed in the 40-time but his agility speeds were a bit behind some of his peers. The reigning Canada West Player of the Year posted 14 bench reps which was good enough for 2nd in his position group.

Bench: 14 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.64s, Vertical Jump: 29″, Broad Jump: 9′ 0 1/8″, 3-Cone: 7.47, Shuttle: 4.46.

5. Anthony Soles, Queen’s, 6′ 0 1/2″, 224 lbs

Soles was competitive in the bench press but some of his other metrics were trailing his peers in the speed and agility testing. Regardless his reps on the bench press are a good indicator of his strength and ability to help in pass protection.

Bench: 13 reps, 40-yard Dash: 5.19s, Vertical Jump: 24″, Broad Jump: 8′ 8 1/8″, 3-Cone: 7.4, Shuttle: 4.66

Fullbacks

Although only 2 players in the combine were listed under FB/TE, both players showcased attributes that are essential for the fullback role.

1. Bradley Hladik, UBC, 6′ 3″, 245 lbs.

Hladik posted good numbers in the bench press as well as good mobility metrics indicating good blocking abilities. His vertical jump further demonstrates his lower body strength. 

Bench: 22 reps, 40-yard Dash: 5.0, Vertical Jump: 32″, Broad Jump: 9′ 1″, 3-Cone: 7.26, Shuttle: 4.52

2. Paul-Antoine Ouellette, Montreal, 6′ 3 3/8″, 239 lbs

Ouellette demonstrated good mobility and his bench press reps indicated adequate strength to aid in pass protection. His shuttle time would have been good enough for third among running backs.

Bench: 14 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.92s, Vertical Jump: 29″, Broad Jump: 9′ 3 1/2″, 3-Cone: 7.27, Shuttle: 4.4

Wide Receivers

1. Frederik Antoine, Laval, 6′ 0 5/8″, 213 lbs

Antoine had the fastest 40-time, the longest broad jump, and the 2nd highest vertical among receivers. He also had the most reps on the bench press among receivers. His performance in the bench press was also greater than any defensive backs, running backs, or linebackers at the combine. Additionally, his 40-time was only 0.02 seconds behind the fasted time at the combine.

Bench: 21 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.53s, Vertical Jump: 36″, Broad Jump: 9′ 9 1/8″

2. Kevin Mital, Laval, 6′ 0 1/2″, 229 lbs

Mital had a very competitive 40-time despite being the heaviest player in this receiver group by over 10 pounds at the combine. He also did very well in the bench press and vertical finishing 2nd in both categories for his position.

Bench: 20 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.58s, Vertical Jump: 35″, Broad Jump: 9′ 6″, 3-Cone: 6.94, Shuttle: 4.51

3. Kevens Clercius, Connecticut, 6′ 2″, 217 lbs

Clercius had a solid 40-time as well as the longest broad jump among receivers. His bench press and vertical further demonstrate his ability to battle for the contested balls.

Bench: 15 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.59s, Vertical Jump: 34″, Broad Jump: 10′ 9 1/4″, 3-Cone: 7.28, Shuttle: 4.57

4. Abdul-Karim Gassama, Manitoba, 5′ 8 5/8″, 158 lbs

AK Gassama needed to show the scouts his speed and agility being the lightest player among this group and he did just that finishing with a competitive 40-time and the third fastest times combined from the agility drills. While his bench press reps were on the lower side it was on the lower side it was impressive to see 5-225-pound reps from the 158-pound player. He also did very well in the vertical and broad jump.

Bench: 5 reps, 40-yard Dash: 4.63s, Vertical Jump: 34.5″, Broad Jump: 10′ 6″, 3-Cone: 6.95, Shuttle: 4.31

5. D’Sean Mimbs, Regina, 5′ 11 7/8″, 188 lbs

Mimbs was highly impressive with his vertical jump that led the receiving group and also did well in the broad jump. His bench press reps were competitive as well. However, he did not participate in the 40-yard dash or the agility drills.

Bench: 14 reps, Vertical Jump: 37″, Broad Jump: 10′ 7 3/4″

Offensive Lineman

1. Ryan Berta, Queen’s, 6′ 2 1/4″, 307 lbs

Berta had the most bench press reps completed among all combine participants. Additionally, his shuttle time indicates good lateral agility for him.

Bench: 30 reps, 40-yard Dash: 5.39s, Vertical Jump: 26″, Broad Jump: 8′ 6″, 3-Cone: 7.96, Shuttle: 4.78

2. Owen Mueller, Windsor, 6′ 4 3/8″, 306 lbs

Mueller was a close second in the bench press finishing with 29 reps. He also finished with the second-longest broad jump among offensive linemen. His 40-yard dash time and agility testing times reflect adequate mobility for his size.

Bench: 29 reps, 40-yard Dash: 5.27s, Vertical Jump: 25.5″, Broad Jump: 8′ 10 1/2″, 3-Cone: 7.94, Shuttle: 4.94

3. Nathaniel Dumoulin Duguay, Laval, 6′ 2 3/8″, 293 lbs

Dumoulin stood out among offensive linemen as he was first among the position group in 40-time, shuttle, and 3-cone. He also did well in the vertical and had the best broad jump of the group. Additionally, his 25 bench reps were very competitive.

Bench: 25 reps, 40-yard Dash: 5.16s, Vertical Jump: 30″, Broad Jump: 9′ 0 5/8″, 3-Cone: 7.33, Shuttle: 4.68

4. John Bosse, Calgary, 6′ 4 1/2″ 335 lbs

Bosse’s 40-yard dash time was impressive finishing 4th among offensive linemen despite carrying over 20 pounds more weight than the next heaviest offensive lineman. Additionally, his shuttle time shows good agility. His 25 reps on the bench press were a good show of strength.

Bench: 25 reps, 40-yard Dash: 5.37s, Vertical Jump: 25″, Broad Jump: 8′ 6 5/8″, 3-Cone: 7.89, Shuttle: 5.13

5. George Una, Windsor, 6′ 2 3/8″, 313 lbs

Una demonstrated a good balance of strength and speed. He placed him 2nd among offensive linemen in both the shuttle and the 3-cone drill. He also did well in the vertical and broad jump and showed good strength in the bench press.

Bench: 24 reps, 40-yard Dash: 5.3s, Vertical Jump: 27″, Broad Jump: 8′ 9″, 3-Cone: 7.7, Shuttle: 4.76
